the first african- american woman elected as the attorney general of the state of california, pamela harris. it was the most progressive slate elected by the latino voters of northern california. it was the janitors, housekeepers, maids, a food- service workers out there going door-to-door. this is what we have to do. it is not enough to vote. we have to go out there and knock on doors to get people out to vote. this is a democracy. this is the only way we can do it. we have got to run for office. we're going to have redistricting. there will be open seats. in a big campaign, we were able to get the largest number of women ever elected to the california legislature. the largest number of african- american women, the largest number of latino women. one woman elected during that campaign is now the great secretary of labor, hilda soliz.
