a new report released today, state attorney general pamela harris says attention dance in schools -- attendance in schools in california is at a crisis level and it's jeopardizing our economy, safety and children. the department of education finds one out of every five elementary schoolchildren are reported to be truant in the 23011-20 owe 10e 20 -- 2011- 2012 school year. they're considered tardy or truant 30 minutes or more. students are more likely to struggle academically and drop out in later years. there is a correlation between the number of criminals and crime victims and high school dropouts who start struggling academically at a young age. many end up in juvenile hall. some counties started informing parents they could face criminal penalties if their children don't go to school but state officials say prosecution is used as a last resort. here's a look at the truancy rate in the bay area. contra costa county ranks the highest at 29%. alameda county and san francisco are at 23%. among those request the lowest rates are marin county and solano county which just had a rate of
