scott gottlieb now former fda commissioner, author of "uncontrolled spread," a book about the pandemic boards of pfizer and illumina and a cnbc contributor. good to see you again. the white house sounding the alarm about delta. are they overreacting? >> i don't think they're overreacting i think what we're going to see in the united states is two decoupling the first is a macro decoupling in that as cases start to pick up, we're going see less death and less hospitalizations. that's a consequence from the virus. that's what we're seeing in the united kingdom people who are older, people more susceptible to the virus have gone out and gotten vaccinated in higher numbers so you're not seeing the same mortality you've seen in some of the past surges. but the other decoupling is a geographic decoupling where certain parts will be more prone to surges and outbreaks. in the northeast or parts of the pacific northwest, san francisco where vaccination rates are very high, they're not going to see the same level of spread they're largely impervious to the kinds of outbreaks we've seen in the pa

pandemic started. >> dr. scott gottlieb, now former-fda commissioner, author of the book "uncontrolled spread." and cnbc contributor for which we are thankful. doctor, at least nine states have already banned mask mandates in schools. broadly, are you concerned new cdc mask guidelines will have no impact >> well, look, i think in terms of mandating that or recommending that people who are vaccinated need to wear masks, again, i think what could be more valuable to people who are vaccinated is just practical guidance on what it means to be vaccinated and what their individual risk is being vaccinated sub -- substantially reduces risk that they have a bad outcome, that they will be hospitalized, or have a severe case of covid. what we are seeing with the delta variant is it is so highly contagious, there are some breakthrough cases where people who are vaccinated are developing mild or asymptomatic infection and probably have the ability to pass on that infection. so if you are vaccinated and you become symptomatic, don't assume that you don't have covid. and if you are caring for young children
