these are not panthers or even potential panthers many of these folks. they are rallying. over 10,000 people rallying in many of them are middle-aged. many of them actually have more moderate politics. here are some of the prisoners in the l.a. shootout. this is seattle. fred hampton, a very vibrant leader from chicago is assassinated in his bed. by the local police working with the fbi. and organizations like the urban league and the naacp turn out in force and protests. here is on the top a rally in new york and on the bottom lima ohio. lima ohio and here is washington d.c.. detroit on the top, new orleans. the new orleans office below philadelphia. omaha. this is just to give you a flavor of some of the sort of spread of the party. so i want to close with just a couple words about why and what that might say more generally about insurgent movements. you know there are different kinds of politics and a lot of political power is built from below. people work with each other and they do organizing work. but there are limits to those kinds of power when it comes to organizi

it's about tomb for the -- time for the black panther party and other former panther or members in the audience. and i want to give a very special thanks, i'm very honored, and we are very lucky to have here with us tonight chairman bobby seale, the founder with huey newton of the black panther party. and chairman seale is in the process of producing a film, and it's going to be a very important film. there have been several films about the panthers, different aspects, but they really haven't done justice to the broader history, and so this is a really important project that chairman seale is taking on, and we're very fortunate he's going get a chance to talk to us all about that as well. so he's going to be coming up as a special guest after, after waldo. so let me jump in. this is a, it's a big book, and i'm not going to take a lot of time here, but i want to give you sort of the outline of the project and our argument, and i'm going to run through some of the photos. we're lucky to have 50 photos in the book, a few of them here and i'm going to share with you tonight, this afternoon

people say that law will certainly stop the black panthers, but that law doesn't apply just to that panthers. it applies to everybody. eventually get a backlash commenced the social and political backlash in general to a lot of things have happened. i think i'm control was one of them. >> host: the 68 at that with prohibited purchasers, right? so it wasn't seen if you're a felon or habitual drug user and dishonorably discharged, mentally dangerous, they use different terminology, but they went through the state eight or nine sections of people that shouldn't be able to buy guns. >> at the time, it took a long time to do those checks and eventually that was replaced with what we have now but fully automated. >> the way wordpress for the 25 year period was in effect the honor system. he went in to buy a gun and they said craig, are you a felon? if he said now come you got to buy your gun. >> the 68 act would allow people to lie and get away with it and that wasn't changed until the brady act. destiny and ics later came. >> said the 68 act, you've got prominent republicans supporting it. when d

the civil rights division of justice he when they decide today drop a case against the new black panther party and this involved a case of the members of the black panther party on election day, standing outside of the polling station, armed with batons and yelling racial epithets at the passersby. it was on the video and the internet and the cost of a victory until they decided to stop the prosecution and there were hearings about this and perez was asked at one of these hearings whether or not it was a decision made by a political appointee at justice. he said no. it turns out subsequent e-mails shows in fact political employees at justice were consulted on this and i hope the senators at his confirmation hearings ask him about this. >> paul: we should point out the justice department make accessible, the spokesman as well as the city of st. paul and they've all declined, dan. >> well, i hope the senators bring this up. he is nominated to secretary of labor which has enforcement authority over the entire american workplace, pensions, minimum wage, and compliance. and if mr. perez goes

you didn't like when the black panthers were outside with the batons the polling place in philly, yout like that. >> that case didn't have anything to do with secretary designate perez. >> actually, it did. the issue came up with the new black panther case in which the inspector general reviewed the case and supported the accusation that there is racial hostility within the civil rights division within the doj when it comes to enforcing civil rights laws and equally when the defendant in the case is black, and the victim in the case is white, and in particular, that existed under mr. perez's civil rights division. >> no, actually the black-- the new black panther party case was resolved before mr. perez joined the justice department. >> sean: and i'm telling you what the inspector general reviewed. >> the inspector general reviewed whether or not there was conflict in that division. yes, there was. there was conflict between careerists and political appointees. >> sean: he's a radical's radical and-- >> come on, that's not content. >> radical, radical, radical, buzz, buzz, buzz, that'

the inspector general was in part, but not in full in the wake of the dismissal of the new black panthernts were black and the complainants, the alleged victims were white. that was ultimately dismissed in large part, not in entirety, but dismissed in large part and led to all sorts of controversy. they looked into that. they looked into a couple of other cases where the defendants were black and the victims were white and voting rights cases and then they looked at the doj and voting rights of the civil division. not just under president obama, but under president bush. what was your take away. they're concerned about partisanship. they're concerned about the interpretation of the voting rights act that's not consistent with the legislation or legislative history. that there's been systemic problems within the department. when you look at the new black panther party case, the idea that you didn't enforce a violation for intimidation and voter harassment because the people harassed were white is ridiculous, but that's the position that this assistant attorney general has taken. that is t
