but that is who the panthers were. it was a whole different, aggressive attitude that people hadn't seen. it was seductive for a lot of different groups. john: one of the most striking things of this summer to me has been the double success, kind of unexpected success, of the movie "straight outta compton." what is the through line for you between this movie and where we are right now in terms of the very same issues that the black panthers were confronting in the late 1960's and the african-american committees are facing now with the police? stanley: the black panthers started 50 years ago, most of his equity 50 years ago this year, and they started as a result of police brutality, as a way to confront this police brutality, that was going on in the african-american community. we are 50 years later and we are still in the same place. part of the reason why we are in the same place is that has never been healed. it was still in the same place. it was never rectified. here we are in the exact same place and we have grou

the panthers were very aggressive. they came out of oakland, california and there was a law in california that said you could carry a loaded weapon in the open as long as it was in the open. and they started following the police around and policing the police. and that's how the panthers began. so it was kind of the real opposite of the nonviolent civil rights movement. and in some ways you know the panthers made people a lot of people in this country gravitate to martin luther king. they were like oh, maybe martin luther king isn't so bad! >> so how does this connect to the black lives matter movement that's sprung up and the reaction to police killings and shootings in communities all across america? >> well, i think one of the things that's happened is that the film is so relevant today. when we started the film seven years ago we thought it had a lot of relevance but it didn't have nearly the relevance that it has today. >> why? >> because the panthers started as a protest as a way to try to get rid of police viole

how -- i'm sitting here next to -- i'm literally feeling the panther vibes -- >> are there actual pantherat documentary out that's highlighting the black panthers movement. and it's really important because a lot of times right now as young people we're told who our heroes should be, who we should follow, what is the script and the blueprint we should adhere to. and in a lot of ways it minimizes not only the violence that was really at that time but minimizes when we talk about political education the variety of tactics and strategies that actually are on the table. doesn't mean we have to use all them but there is something. there are different types of resistan resistance. what a lot of people are afraid of is this movement is in a position to actually engage in a conversation of what are the different tactics. which ones are actually going to liberate us. why don't we, you know -- why can't we feel comfortable bearing arms to protect ourselves, right, and there's a reason for that, but they're at least open to the discussion of that. sitting next to -- >> well, you know, black lives mo

, to the incarceration of black panthers and other black radicals. i think that that was a clear, unquestionable, aspect of that strategy of the state in not just undermining the left, but really to obliterate any notion that you should fight back, that you should resist, that you should have a different conception of what society and life should be like. i think the other part of that, we have oppression -- the other part is co-optation and the absorption of a layer of african-americans into the system to demonstrate that american capitalism could work, could be successful, and to also shifted the burden of governing black urban spaces at that time from white political achines to black political machines, with the hope that that would be able to help remove at least one of the antagonisms that was driving the black rebellion of the 1960's. in many ways, the left is still recovering from this very conservative -- concerted effort at destabilization in the 1960's and 1970's, but i think where the hope lies -- it's very difficult to talk about the rebu
