and from the black panther party and leading the black panther party. i knew i wanted to be engaged with what i felt was the black panther. the other aspect it was working in the prisons. in the presence and at the time i click came out of the black panther party. and other people who have been in the black panther party with me who were in prison. one of the things i did disconnected from the black panther party still wanted to be active in the community i created a prison program. and this may sound familiar as a conversation has gone. had three aspects the first aspect was a bookstore. the bookstore was intended to get books into the jail and get books and the community. books that would help increase the awareness and consciousness of black people. they have a model. we have george jackson as a model. he educated himself. and have become devoted and committed to the community. as a petty criminal. and who have educated himself and came out was very committed to the community. feeling like there was so much brain power as i still feel in the jails to

that is what i created when i came out of the black panther party. i have been fortunate enough to see those phases manifest themselves the bookstore which i close the same year i open the publishing company in 1978 i closed it down and opened a publishing company. the publishing company and printing company were almost 20 years later. when eyes thinking about a printing company at that time you had a multimillion dollar plan. big presses with 40 people on staff. i had no idea how that would work. i imagined it in the same sense people like frederick douglass, people like martin delaney. people who my ancestors who resisted saw the importance of having a voice and instrument to be a voice for the black community. and directed in a resistant way so cultures this created could restore that community and build it. that's what i saw that i attempted to do. >> why did you leave the black panther party? >> the easiest way to say it was that it's time. but that doesn't give you information. i left it at a time that the party was transitioning into something
