party that inspires the black panthers we think about in the contemporary context. so walters was all for that, but that does not happen in a way he anticipated. i will take questions. >> do you think that black power was a logical extension to the integration of the civil rights movement? was it just a break? mr. joseph: it is both. it is separate and distinct. when you think about civil rights and black power, you think about the black freedom struggle as a huge redwood in california, a redwood tree. there are many, many branches, and at times, those branches intertwine, and at times those branches are separate. black power is rooted in the same tree, but is definitely a different ranch. -- branch. one thing we have to remember, the way politics works, people are very complex, so there are people who are part of both movements. there are naacp activists who admire and participate in aspects of black power. i'm not talking about roy wilkins or thurgood marshall, but black power and civil rights at times can converge. but one thing about black power that was differe

there was a young african american man in the front row who was a very convinced black panther. and as soon as hayden launched into kirk, the guy stood up and at haydened yelling and said, "you have no right to do this. you did not listen to this man. this man has more respect for us than you are showing now." by all accounts, kirk won the debate because whatever he said, he treated everybody well. it was not a show for him. this was serious conversation. i think it is really important to note that kirk in his life, whatever again modern conservativism has become, kirk was always a defender of people who would have been called minorities in the 1950's. always. he believed the changes that happen in the 1960's were necessary. from the beginning. editorial in 1963. this would not go over well with libertarians or hard-core free market rights. he said he thought one of the ugliest things that had developed in american culture were roadsigns, big billboards. he has an editorial in one of his newspaper columns where he thought all americans should spend their time defacing billboards

when we did a show about black panther, the phenomenon that was "black panther" as a cultural moment. it was really important to not just think about the film itself but to think about the long history of efforts of black self-determination that were informing the popularity of that film and i had the opportunity to write about that for the hollywood reporter but to put that in a podcast format that reached, again, a very wide audience for important for getting people to appreciate that what was happening was not just a comic book movie or another moment of pop culture. when we had a discussion about confederate monuments, as historians we were trying to get our footing. where do we stand on existing confederate statuary? how do we imagine an appropriate response to a moment now where the country is grappling with whether or not it should memorialize traitors in some camps or war heroes in another. for me i'm going to have a conversation with folks i really respect who are extraordinarily and deeply informed about these issues. it was a moment, i think, again to experiment in what the
