the black panthers more there to do violence. they were there as a political protest as california was considering the doctrine of new gun control laws. laws that were designed to -- with their guns openly displayed. and that law, a lot to disarm the panthers was supported not despite democrats, but by conservatives in california as well. in fact the governor the times strongly supported the law and said he did know why anyone would carry guns -- he would go on to become the president of united states, ronald reagan. reagan was a big interest of the gun control law. it was the laws that were this law and the laws like the gun control act that many people at the time that was not designed to control guns but control around black that were riding in the worst race riots in newark. committing a lot of crime. there is an increase of crime rates especially in the 1960s. these laws that were designed to restrict access to black radicals in urban areas like the black panthers ended up sparking eight backlash among white rule conservativ

>> for black history month, one east bay city celebrating the life of the co-founder of the black panther party. dr. newton started the group in oakland back in 1956 and this morning dignitaries were in oakland to honor the achievement and legacy he left behind. cierra johnson was there for the ceremony. talk to us about how they are remembering dr. newton. >> reporter: yes, good morning, well, it was really a reunion of sorts with folks from the black panther party foundation and as well as city leaders here in oakland, they gathered to remember him by presenting a street sign with his name in the area where he took his last breath. this all taking place on what would have been his 79th birthday. his widow, family members, community members, they unveiled that sign at the corner here in west oakland. speakers shared memories of dr. newton and spoke of the vision of dr. newton. and they say that they wanted to create ways to honor him and now takes permanent fixture here in the city. >> now what i'm really focused on is figuring out what other stories that haven't been told that can be ki
