funeral services are about to begin for the fallen paramedic. peggy fox is live in alexandria with more. peggy. >> reporter: the funeral begins in an hour at 1:00 at temple bethel here on seminary road. the procession has been going on for the past hour and we saw casket, we saw procession of hundreds of alexandria firefighters and paramedics and their equipment coming in. the firetrucks, the ambulances. we saw flags being raised. they have closed down seminary road here for this procession. this huge, huge american flag flying up above as the procession has been going underneath. many people here paying their respects, saluting as the casket goes by. joshua weissman was 33 years old when he died in a freak accident, trying to save someone he thought was in danger in a burning vehicle on i-395 last wednesday night. it was raining, he was jumping over one jersey wall to another. and there was a drop 30 feet down and he fell between the two bridges and died several days later. we have his family here to pay their respects, of course, and many fire

every firefighter and paramedic in the city of alexandria will be have the day off. they are off duty till 7:00 tonight. their shifts covered by ear professionals around the -- by other professionals around the region so they can come here to say goodbye to their friend, their colleague and coworker. the 33-year-old helped create the training program in his seven years as an alexandria paramedic. sadly, though, no training could have prevented that freak and tragic accident that claimed his life last week as he rushed to a burning car, he jumped the guardrails on 395 to cross the highway never seeing a gap in between that led to a 30-foot drop below. weissman is survived by his wife but it was his brother who spoke to the media for the very first time yesterday about the comfort they're receiving in this difficult time. >> the hundreds in the alexandria fire department and with other emergency service units from near and far have shown us with their steadfastness and compassion why josh loved what he did so much. if it's possible to take anything positive out of some

paramedics are going to give that to heart attack patients to help prevent brain cells from dying.ack patients in santa clara county will get a special new treatment on their way to the e.r. once paramedics resuscitate patients, they'll then cool their bodies down. >> what we're doing now is we'll start ivs on them and we'll administer ice solutions. >> reporter: by using chilled iv fluids to cool the body down just five degrees, the treatment can help stop brain cell death which can ultimately impact how well a patient functions after a heart attack. >> we feel it's not enough just to keep the patient alive, but you want somebody who's going to be functional who are able to walk out of the hospital, still resume the activities of daily living and be functional and be the person they were before. >> reporter: once patients reach the hospital, they'll continue to be chilled for the next several hours to prevent more cell deaths. santa clara county is the first in the bay area to require this new protocol, which research has shown greatly improves how well patients recover. an icy tr

we now have obtained the picture of this 33-year-old paramedic. weissman was responding to a car fire on 395 near glebe road yesterday evening when he got out of his car, and get this -- somehow he fell through a gap in-between the two spans of the bridge. he dropped 20 feet into a rocky creek below. >> medic units are dispatched with engine companies on autofires to provide medical assistance. they were responding as part of that initial response. they came up on the -- autofire first. the other person on the medic unit reported immediately what had happened and at that point we dispatched additional resources to deal with that issue as well. >> reporter: now weissman was reportedly in cardiac arrest when he was pulled from the creek. and we're told by witnesses on the scene that crews worked feverishly to revive him. we'll have more from those witnesses coming up in a half hour and explanation as to how he could have fallen from that bridge coming up in my next report, in the next half hour. >> thank you delia. live at washington hospital center
