we have more than 100 different community groups called park partners all across the city. each of them working in their own way to make our park system a little better, a little more beautiful, a little more usable. today this is the day for one of those groups, the friends of lafayette park. this is a shining example of how a few neighbors can come together, bring together their friends, and make an incredibly beautiful thing happen in a public open space. this park was renovated with bond dollars, but friends of lafayette park brought in hours and hours of hard work over four years to do visioning and imagining what this park could really look like. they raised over half a million dollars of private fund to augment the bond dollars so that this kind of a playground could be added to this park. it's been that kind of selfless generosity, and hours of giving to the city that is just an incredible humbling experience for us at the parks alliance. let's have another round of applause for carina and lynn and all of the volunteers who have made such an incredible contribution t

and the first partnership to build parking in the city and under union square and people were asking how did you do this thing all over the country and we built more of these types of garages under parks and helping to pay to keep the parks in business. the next thing that happened started in oklahoma city. they found they had to put in meertds to cause turn over for the merchants and of course as san francisco as other cities did this say source of spare change while doing good and turn over with parking but we continue in san francisco doing a pretty silly thing. in 1955 the zoning codes were changed to require that if you want to build a house, an apartment, or anything you have to provide a parking place. now did people want that to park on the street? did they want that so there is no development in the neighborhood? who knows but this is a major problem and increases the number of cars. later on the next thing happen you continued building nor garages and followed by building a freeway virtually on geary street and convenient for people to drive down to the garages.

the sharp park -- sharp park is a unique project, a park for the city. it's located in pacifica but [speaker not understood] but is owned by san francisco. it includes 27 acres of wetlands. you can barely see it in the image above. that's the entire area of sharp park and the wetlands located to the west of [speaker not understood] in the blue area next to the coast. it also has a number of special status species including the california red legged frog and the san francisco garter snake. as don mentioned the fish and wildlife has provided us with a biological opinion and that includes 32 mitigation or cultivation measures. one of which is the up land habitat restoration. and to comply with the biological opinion, we need to complete that work by october 31st of this year with a short window during the summer months to do work. so we don't have an adverse impact on the special status species. the up land habitat restoration work includes three locations for a total of a half acre. you can refer to the diagram up here. two of those locations are the horse
