we have more than 100 different community groups called park partners all across the city. each of them working in their own way to make our park system a little better, a little more beautiful, a little more usable. today this is the day for one of those groups, the friends of lafayette park. this is a shining example of how a few neighbors can come together, bring together their friends, and make an incredibly beautiful thing happen in a public open space. this park was renovated with bond dollars, but friends of lafayette park brought in hours and hours of hard work over four years to do visioning and imagining what this park could really look like. they raised over half a million dollars of private fund to augment the bond dollars so that this kind of a playground could be added to this park. it's been that kind of selfless generosity, and hours of giving to the city that is just an incredible humbling experience for us at the parks alliance. let's have another round of applause for carina and lynn and all of the volunteers who have made such an incredible contribution t

announcing a new project in san francisco to bring free wi-fi to 31 different parks, plazas, and open spaces across our city. from areas such as the marina green to washington square park to sunset playground, all a moe square, civic center, bernal heights to right here in balboa park, this project is going to touch parks and plazas across all of san francisco in every corner of our city. san francisco has been a leader in our technology community and our technology economy across our country and now we get to continue to play a role in being a leader bringing technology solutions to improve the lives of our residents here in our city. it's been a privilege to work on this project and to lead this effort the last two years and look forward to bringing the broader vision of free wi-fi across san francisco in the next few years with all the partners behind me today. this has been a strong collaboration on behalf of a lot of partners. in particular, google, sf city, our recreation and park department as well as our department of technology, and i want to thank all of those involved. this project started a litt

and the first partnership to build parking in the city and under union square and people were asking how did you do this thing all over the country and we built more of these types of garages under parks and helping to pay to keep the parks in business. the next thing that happened started in oklahoma city. they found they had to put in meertds to cause turn over for the merchants and of course as san francisco as other cities did this say source of spare change while doing good and turn over with parking but we continue in san francisco doing a pretty silly thing. in 1955 the zoning codes were changed to require that if you want to build a house, an apartment, or anything you have to provide a parking place. now did people want that to park on the street? did they want that so there is no development in the neighborhood? who knows but this is a major problem and increases the number of cars. later on the next thing happen you continued building nor garages and followed by building a freeway virtually on geary street and convenient for people to drive down to the garages.

near park city, utah, there have been mandatory evacuation orders. firefighters are getting the upper hand with the blaze being 50% contained. it's not just utah. firefighters in at least nine states are facing historic conditions. >>> hannah anderson made her first public appearance. she did not say a word as she arrived at a fund-raiser for her family thursday, but her father spoke on her behalf. >> hannah sends her love. she's doing good day by day. we'll just keep moving forward from here. >>> court papers detail dozens of items seized from james dimaggio's home. they include letters from hannah, a hand cuff box and fire bombs. the documents did not elaborate on the letters or the nature of the devices. they say james dimaggio exchanged about 13 call wes hannah before killing her mother and her brother. >>> from the movie "independence day" to x-files," people have long speculated about the site known as area 51. for now, the government is officially recognizing area 51 and its location about 120 miles northwest of las vegas. but no confirmation

the sharp park -- sharp park is a unique project, a park for the city. it's located in pacifica but [speaker not understood] but is owned by san francisco. it includes 27 acres of wetlands. you can barely see it in the image above. that's the entire area of sharp park and the wetlands located to the west of [speaker not understood] in the blue area next to the coast. it also has a number of special status species including the california red legged frog and the san francisco garter snake. as don mentioned the fish and wildlife has provided us with a biological opinion and that includes 32 mitigation or cultivation measures. one of which is the up land habitat restoration. and to comply with the biological opinion, we need to complete that work by october 31st of this year with a short window during the summer months to do work. so we don't have an adverse impact on the special status species. the up land habitat restoration work includes three locations for a total of a half acre. you can refer to the diagram up here. two of those locations are the horse

. >> the fire in utah is at park city, the area that hosted many events of the 2002 winter olympics. it's destroyed 40 homes, catching lots of residents unaware and giving them just minutes to grab possessions to flee the flames. with firefighters working in heat and pushing 100 degrees, they're being stretched. >> evacuations are cumbersome and complex. we're strapped, trying to get as many resources as we can to come down here and help us but a lot of other places have the same problem we do. >> meanwhile, the beaver creek fire in sun valley, idaho has stretched to 100 square miles, a lot of affluent homes in the area. officials are saying some private insurance have sent in their own crews to provide structural protection to those homes with the highest values. thousands are firefighters are expected in overnight as eevacuate orders are extending to the north area in central idaho. it's now 100 square miles now in beaver creek. strong winds and dry tender are turning sun valley into a powder keg. the ski resorts have turned on their water cannons to protect the slopes and chair li

. >>> the fire being battled at yosemite national park, city officials are transferring water from other reservoirs. they are confident that the public can be protected and the fire still covers 250 square miles, by the way that is about the size of the city of chicago. it is now 20% contained, and the fire chief said they now have the blaze boxed in, which will allow them to drop fire retardant and slow its spread. are there evacuations even though they say this fire is now 20% contained? >> there are evacuation advisories, which is not a mandatory evacuation but an advisory. while they hope they can keep fire interest those areas, they cannot guarantee it, and if people are being extra prudent they would be advised to leave. it is snowing ash here at the command post. the fire did grow an additional 10,000 acres overnight to a total of 180,000. the cost estimate has gone up to $27 million. also apparently more structures have been destroyed. yesterday, 24 homes have been destroyed, and today that has swelled to 31 homes and 80 outbuildings lost to fire. they're focusing on the northwes
