rob reynolds al jazeera, park city, utah. >> let's bring in david polan, editor in chief of movie city news. thanks for being here. how exactly are some of these films chosen for sundance? >> the process is a combination of straight movies being submitted. over 8,000 films are submitted every year to sundance. then there's kind of another tier the festival doesn't like to talk about too much but ends up making up a lot of films in the festival, people who know people, connected with other projects going on with sundance outside of the festival itself who have the right agent, right person. those have a little bit of influence going into it but it's a mixture, 80% somebody who knew somebody and 20% things that just came over the transom. >> connections with people who came over the transom but what about the time? why do people jockey for screen dates? >> it's a jockeying to get in early. almost all the action really happens in the first four or five days. by tuesday the city starts emptying out essentially. you can go in main street in park city, unwalkable and then all of a sudden you

if you were watching the show last week, you know i was in park city, utah for sundance film festivalre i left i had a chance to sit down with robert redford, the founder of the festival, who's now executive producing two television series here for cnn. there were a lot of highlights and i wanted to show a couple today including his thoughts on this year's festival and his views of president obama. >> bob, thanks for joining me. >> my pleasure. >> one of the films you see at sundance every other year are your favorites-r they the more timely ones, ones about current affairs like syria, for example? >> no. i think the value for me with the films is when i see evidence of innovation. i see new ways of telling stories. whether it's cinematographically, whether it's using the camera -- >> you haven't seen everything? >> no. there's no way i could see everything. that's one of the frustrations of being here at a festival i started back in 1985, when we had one theater and we had maybe 25 or 30 films. maybe two or three documentaries. and just a few people wandering around the streets. and

. >> the man that directed freedom summer is joining us from park city, utah.s for joining us. tell our viewers why you decided to tackle the subject. >> there is a couple of reasons. one of the main reason is it's the 50th anniversary of freedom summer this year. we forgot in large part how people struggled to vote and how hard it was to get the vote in mississippi. >> it's not the first time you dealt with the subjects. it's important for all of us to learn what was going on then. you bring a lot of passion to the subject. tell us why. >> one of the things i try to do to make it is not for them to live in a bubble. we want to inform the present by telling the past. we can learn a lot about where we are by knowing where we've before. we want to do that in the film. you think about our lives and where we are going in the future. >> in the clip, robert moses said he's volunteers would be house and harbored, but a lot of us forget and we shouldn't that a lot of these volunteers who went down to fight for civil rights in mississippi, this was a dangerous enterpris

. >> it's another chilling scene, this time on the slopes of park city, utah.d boy dangles from a chair lift 30 feet in the air while witnesses stand helpless below. >> we were coming up, and first thing we heard a scream, and we looked up. >> vaughn grew up skiing in the utah mountains, familiar with the winding trails and steep terrain. for him the chair lift is a peaceful break, a chance to relax between runs. but his normally carefree ride. abruptly turns to horror when vaughn and his family face a boy in a desperate struggle. >> at that time we didn't know what was going on. why he was struggling so bad. >> it's a sight vaughn has never seen. but he's not immediately worried. he thinks the lift operator could simply back the chair up to the drop-off area that was much less steep. but that drop area is not as close as it seems. and what vaughn doesn't realize is that the boy's backpack is caught in the chair. the strap is around his neck and slowly choking him. >> you can see him just really kicking and struggling to try and get free. >> vaughn films the te

"rich hill" is one of them, a very eintimate of the wrong sid of the tracks. >> who are these characters? >> andrew, harley and apache, young kids coming of age. they are like a lot of american kids but struggling to survive. >> it is hard to watch at times but you also feel it is emotional. you feel for them an you feel a little hope at the end. what's the takeaway? you guys worked two years on this film. what did you take away? what did you come away with? >> for us, how much love is in these homes despite having so little. i found that beautiful and touching and continually surprising throughout production. >> the other thing that's amazing is that these individuals are coming here to sundance. first premier of this film is sunday night. they are coming her
