beth parker on the scene just steps from the capitol with the latest. beth? >> reporter: brian, we have new information from the u.s. capitol police breath. thindividual we told you about earlier driving the car, the witnesses say was going at a high rate of speed is dead. the police confirm that. witnesses tell us it began in union station and turned out as what is to be a routine traffic stop. the police told this individual to stop, the white mercedes and that he did not so doso. that is when police apparently started following him, one, maybe two cars. and they ended up here coming out of louisiana avenue and turning right in front of the capitol. we're told that that individual was driving, according to witnesses, probably 16 miles an hour. that he jumped out of the car and started shooting. we know one officer was hit by the car and we don't have the condition of the officer. we did learn the individual died. here's more from u.s. park police. >> the suspect produced a weapon, the officers gave verbal commands, demanded the suspect put the weapon down.

beth parker is live outside of superior court in northwest with the details. >> reporter: banita jacks saw some familiar faces among the witnesses today. one of them her daughter's best friend and another a metropolitan police officer who showed up at her door d offered to help her. plus there was more testimony today involving those gruesome autopsy photos. through it all, banita jacks showed no reaction. the first witness of the day, shawn eta ragland said she and the older daughter britney jacks were so close they considered themselves sistered. she said she heard jacks call her daughter mean names and ragland testified that banita tried to isolate her daughter. ragland testified that in april of 2007, about eight months before the girls' bodies were found, britney's cell phone was disconnected. officer issac scott in the blue says he never saw britney when he house in lahouse in late april, 2007 in his role as a metropolitan police officer. he was there to check on the welfare of the children. after getting a complaint that the kids were not in school. scott says jacks refused to l

beth parker reports. >> reporter: there are very few people who do what dr.adison goff does for a living. he's a forensic entomologist. basically he studies how insects feed on dead bodies. goff came from his home in hawaii to d.c. supreme court to testify in the murder trial of banita jacks, the mother accused of killing her four daughters and living with their bodies for months. goff studied the weather at the time, the insects found at the scene and how old they were. based on all of that he testified the jacks girls died not before april 2007 but not after october 2007. remember, their bodies were found in their southeast ri rowhouse on january 9, 2008. d.c. medical examiners have testified that the girls' bodies were so decop posed that doctors could not determine an exact cause of death. they consulted with dr. wim rodriguez -- dr. william rodriguez, the chief forensic anthropologist for the entire u.s. military. he oversaw the investigation of mass graves from war crimes in kosovo after he studied photos and tissue samples from the jacks kids, rodrigue
