parkinson's disease was first described in 1817 by the british physician, james parkinson. approximately one million people in the united states alone are afflicted. parkinson's' onset is typically subtle and commonly developed between 55 and 85. its features include tremors, difficulty moving, slowness of moving and muscular stiffness. it results when cells in the part of the brain that produce dopamine fail and deteriorate. there is currently no cure for parkinson's disease. huntington's is more complex than parkinson's. it is a hereditary nur lodgal disorder first described by james huntington. those affiliated typically see the signs in early middle age. the symptoms develop gradually over time causing a progressive degeneration of cells in the brain and slowly impairs a person's ability to walk, think, and talk. there is currently no cure. tonight i am joined by two people who deeply understand parkinson's and huntington's. sam posey is a retired race car driver and television commentator for abc sports. he has had parkinson's disease for 18-year-old. they will each sh

a tool that was borrowed from the world of parkinson's where we also have that as a treatment for parkinson's. in this case you go into this one area that looks like it's overactive. by stimulating near it, you reduce the firing rate. it reduces activity and people will respond accordingly with a reduction in depressive symptoms and some with a true remission of the disorder. so this is a very powerful demonstration that this disorder can be thought of as a circuitry problem. almost like an arrhythmia where, by changing the circuit, changing the it are. you can get improvement. >> there are two other things that emerged from the thing that tom is talking about. this is helen mayberg's work. she introduced us to deep brain stimulation. she also showed that in milder forms of deflaegs do respond to therapy, she imaged the circuit and she saw there was reversal in the abnormality. so she could tell that psychotherapy produces functional changes in the brain. it's really quite beautiful. and in that case showed very similar changes to selective serotonin uptake inhibitors. >> and it begins to tea

that's the pathway that degenerate whence people get parkinson's disease, okay. these drugs, unfortunately, block that pathway too and produce the side effects. now interestingly enough the newer generation of molecules actually danny's medicine, a drug called clozaril spares that pathway and only really works on that messo limbic pathway and that's why we think clozapine has other side effects that we're worried about but produces far fewer of those neurological side effects. and patients take those drugs much more regularly than they do the ones that produce those neurological side effects. they're not easy side effects. patients with schizophrenia treated with the older generation of medicines generally stop taking their medicines. very poor compliance. and then almost invariably their symptoms return. they become sick again and often unfortunately have to be hospitalized. now -- >> are there metabolic side effects. >> very important point well. have sort of traded side effects. we've traded the neurological side effects, the parkinsonian side effects i talked
