drive down the fairfax county parkway.sn't so bad, but definitely still snow on the parkway. you could see a little bit more ice. vdot is urging drivers this morning, if you can, to delay your trips until after the sun comes up and hopefully we'll start to warm up the service temperatures. i'm getting a reading here of minus 6. so the road crews have been out. we've seen so many folks here treating the roads trying to remove the snow, but when temperatures are so cold it makes it very difficult for that salt to be effective. so give it some time and we'll see improving conditions throughout the day today. >>> check out new video just into the live desk of a daring rescue out in italy. about 200 people were stranded tea resort stuck on the gondola gondolas. a free fell and cut power to the table cars. the fear was that the cable would snap and those gondolas would come crashing down. but take a look at the rescue operation, 18 hours is how long it took to get every off of those cable cars. a helicopter lowering rescuers to

parkway is looking much better this noon. quite the improvement compared to earlier this morning where a number of cars were pulled off to the side of the road because of flat tires. all because of potholes. now, problems started close to midnight on the northbound lanes near stout run. nearly 20 cars had at least one tire blown. eventually, park police had to shut down the road for emergency repairs but almost immediately after crews wrapped up repairs on the northbound lanes, the southbound lanes started to look like a war zone. a number of cars were pulled off to the side of the road with flat tires. the numbers doubling to 16 within 20 minutes. >> we were coming down -- coming up the parkway and my original tire blew. we found a senior overlook and we changed it to the expire tire. >> in some cases, drivers can file a claim but the g.w. parkway isn't maintained by fairfax county or vdot. it's maintained by the national park service. and they claim immunity to these claims. so drivers will have to cover these costs themsel

because overnight, chunks of rock fell on to the parkway from a crumbling bridge. as mike conneen reports, in late 2014 ddot was planning to rehabilitate that bridge later this year. mike: every year tens of thousands of cars pass over and under the bridge on the rock creek parkway. this morning, many drivers face delays after u.s. park police shut down the parkway's two southbound lanes after discovering around 1:00 a.m. "fairly significant pieces of the bridge had fallen on to the roadway." no one was injured but as one officer described the debris, these were not pebbles. few, except for runners and cyclists who use the trail here realize what the bridge looks like from underneath. >> i've never seen pieces come down. sometimes i don't look up. i'm scared if i look up it will hit me in the face. mike: clearly, the underside is not in good condition with signs of erosion and rebar hanging down. by morning rush, most of the debris was removed from the roadway. there's a lot of pieces of rock some as big as my fist. >> that's terrible. mike: structural engineers sp

parkway. >> the g.w. parkway is looking much better this noon. quite the improvement compared to earlier this morning where a number of cars were pulled off to the side of the road because of flat tires. all because of potholes. now, problem started close to midnight on the northbound lanes near stout run. nearly 20 cars had at least one tire blown. eventually, u.s. park police had to shut down the road for emergency repairs but almost immediately after crews wrapped up repairs on the northbound lanes, the southbound lanes started to look like a war zone. a number of cars were pulled off to the side of the road with flat tires. the numbers doubling to 15 within 20 minutes. >> we were coming up the parkway and my original tire blew. we found a scenic overlook and we changed it to the spare tire and then the spare tire blew too, because of the potholes. >> now in some cases, drivers can file claims. but the g.w. parkway isn't maintained by fairfax county or vdot. it's maintained by the national park service and they claim immunity to these claims.
