let's bring in bill pascrell of new jersey tonight. also robert riech. gentlemen, great to have you with us tonight. congressman, let's start with you first. what do you expect with paul ryan at the helm of these negotiations? >> it doesn't send -- i'm not frightened about that situation. in fact, one of the things that paul does bring to the table, and i think it's necessary here, ed, is urgency. this is an urgent situation we need to address. if we kick this can down the street, and i would contend that if you do away with all of the bush tax cuts and we supposedly start anew in january or february, i don't think that helps us down the path. i think we could strike a deal to get 218 votes. we need about 30 or 40 votes on the republican side in the house of representatives. this is a time when we have to step up to the plate. >> what do you have to give up to get that though? >> we're going to have tax cuts, but we're also going to have cuts in the budget. we have to start that process. that was part of the president's deal. it's a balanced approach. i

joining me now is congressman bill pascrell of new jersey. welcome to you, sir. for joining us. i hope you had a good thanksgiving. >> happy holiday to you. >> thank you so much. let's talk about sandy and the recovery. how is it going? >> moving along slowly. most people have had their power returned and, of course, if you don't have a house, it doesn't matter whether you have power in the neighborhood. a lot of folks are out there working in a voluntary capacity. and i have to tell you, alex, the local county oems, office of emergency management, they have done a spectacular job in north jersey and i think i really salute them. they seldom get the credit due. the utilities did the best they possibly could have. i know public service, electric and gas is up to snuff. they had almost 400 trucks from out of state. that helped us get power restored. if your power is out, it's never quick enough, as you well know. >> sure. >> and i think by late this afternoon or early monday, alex, we will have an estimated damage cost in new jersey which will help us then put a pl

now the other with new jersey congressman bill pascrell a democrat on the house budget committee, waysttee. welcome back to "america's newsroom." there is a headline from your colleague on the house side from republicans, so when do democrats show their hand on entitlement reform, sir? >> i don't think that the republicans have showed their hand. we have the same tune, a little different lyrics coming after the election. i have a great deal of respect for speaker boehner, but i don't think they've changed at all. to put revenue on the table and simply talk about possibility of capping or doing away with certain deductions is a disservice to the middle class. we support very clearly maintaining the tax cuts for the middle class of this country, that means 98% of the people will get a tax -- continue to get a tax cut, 97% of businesses we've made that very, very clear. bill: that wasn't the question. the question was about retitlement reform, medicare and medicaid. will you be willing to come to the table and negotiate on those two items in order for people like john boehner and eric can
