pat collins explains the connection between that suspect and a high-profile murder case two years ago. pat? >> reporter: doreen, two years ago he was involved in a high-profile robbery and murder. last night he commits another robbery, but this time, this time he ends up dead. a man linked to the murder of brian betts, a popular d.c. principal, shot and killed last night with his own gun as he was allegedly trying to commit a robbery here in southeast. 21-year-old joel johnson, gunned down inside this apartment on first street. sources tell the story this way. they say a man and a woman are walking out here. that johnson and another guy approached them and forced them inside, into the victims' third-floor apartment. they say once inside the apartment, the victim wrestles the gun away from johnson and shoots him in the head. frightened, the woman jumps out of the third-floor window onto the grass. she was injured. she had to be taken to the hospital. scared, the second gunman drops his weapon and jumps out of the same third-floor window, and makes his escape. now we talked to a man who

news4's pat collins is live at police headquarters, where officials are trying to get the word out. pat? >> reporter: it's been more than two years. he's still at large. it appears this most wanted sex offender is back at work in the germantown and gaithersburg areas. we first encountered him in june of 2010. father hurley boulevard, germantown. he breaks into the apartment of a 68-year-old woman, sexually assaults her and then he escapes. about two months later, right across the street at the churchill senior living center, he strikes again. this time the victim, an 86-year-old woman. so brazen is this man, that in january of 2011, he went back to the first victim's apartment, broke in for a second time, and sexually assaulted that 68-year-old woman a second time. we spoke to her. >> i am determined to do everything i can to see to it this arrogant little twerp doesn't get away with it. >> reporter: now we learn of more crimes that police believe may be linked to the same man. august 28th, 2011, these apartments in the 900 block of plopper road, it's about 1:00 in the morning. polic

live downtown, i'm pat collins. news 4. >> when it rains, it pours in this city, pat. >> all right. >> we're going to be welcoming rg-iii a little bit later. pat, we'll see you at 5:00. >>> wild weather over the weekend. people in the area are still cleaning up after those violent storms. news 4 has more on the extensive damage in fairfax county. >> reporter: we're here on south shore road in reston. this is a neighborhood with a lot of tall, very mature trees. in saturday's storm they came tumbling down on tops of cars. you can see the damage done here. you can see a huge stack of broken limbs here. we also across the street have a truck that was crushed by a falling tree. and you can also see the damage done to this house here. the carport collapsed on top of the car here. just a very scary situation for folks who live here in this neighborhood. fortunately, though, no injuries, no serious injuries in this storm. so despite all of the damage, people who live here say that they consider themselves to be quite lucky.

pat collins talked to relatives and neighbors about this devastating news. >> reporter: the snik family, they were from california, but for a year they lived here in washington. they loved riding the metro. they loved spending time here on the mall. >> the kids liked to be on the metro train. they called it daddy's train. going into d.c. i think they were having picnics there. >> reporter: 30-year-old christopher schmitt, his wife, diana, seven months pregnant with a baby boy to be named ethan. their two sons, 3-year-old samuel, 2-year-old conner. this entire family, their two dogs and a cat, all killed in this horrific crash on a highway in nebraska i talked to diana's father. >> it's devastating, to lose all five in one moment. >> reporter: chris schmitt was a ten-year air force veteran. about a year ago, he moved his family to these apartments in gaithersburg so he could take a job with the department of energy. john and davies remembers the schmitt family and their kids playing out front. >> this is terrible. this is so shocking. i don't know what words to use to describe. >> report
