unfortunately that's not something pat toomey has done. a lot of people are doing in the republican party. they are on a rehabilitation tour for their legacies. he wants to make sure he's invited back into polite society by taking a couple of votes and standing up to a man that he should have been standing up to for many, many years while he was in office. you know, i wish pat toomey had shown this same level of spine when donald trump was impeached the first time. i guess he got it out of storage and it's better late than never, but i am looking forward to us having a different senator who doesn't just vote correctly when he's trying to get a consulting gig or whatever he's going to do next, but somebody who centers working pennsylvanians every day and the rule of law. >> is that senator going to be senator kenyatta? toomey is not running for reelection in two years. there will probably be a wide open field in the republican primary and a few candidates in the democratic primary. are you thinking about it? >> i'm always thinking. the whee

i don't understand winning what, with pat toomey, they got what they wanted on taxes. do they want, is it all race stuff? >> it's hard for me because we have to parse this out. it is multi layered, the problem, because as a young activist in the party why i got involved in the d.c. gop is i was a young political operative. i thought i will asend the ranks and solidify a career. when i realized that's not how it is done, it was kind of too late for me. when i looked around, saw who was standing around me, i saw a bunch of nobodies. that sounds horrible to say in some ways, but these nobodies were pushing extreme messages, trying to say this is what will win elections. occasionally going back to topics at hand, taxes, limited government, defense, whatever it was. now there's none of that. it is trumpism. in this moment i get it. so many people made that calculation that they don't want to live with this party. i myself have not, i believe i can be a better agent of change from the inside than the outside. i have been republican longer than donald j. trump ever was. the r

joining me to respond is representative pat toomey from the great commonwealth.ou think $1.9 trillion is not necessary. why is she necessary? >> i have a lot of respect for secretary yellen. she's a very, very capable, talented person, but she's not the leader of the independent federal reserve anymore. she is now the treasury secretary, and as such, her job is to be the biggest cheerleader for whatever economic policy president biden wants. the problem with this is, jake, 42 days ago we passed the fifth huge bill, another trillion dollars, bringing the total to over $4 trillion. much of that money, a huge amount of that money, is not even out the door yet. much of it was way too broad and not sufficiently targeted as it was. all of these bills were passed with big bipartisan votes. the biggest of them, the cares act from march, over $2 trillion. not a single no vote in the entire senate. so here we are. the economy has come roaring back, the unemployment rate is less than half of what it was, disposable income is at record high, savings rates are at record highs

senator pat toomey is one of the seven. meecht in the coming weeks to decide what to do, if anything, but several counties are not waiting, and they have already voted to censure toomey. my next guest disagrees with that. sam dimarco is the chairman of the republican committee of allegheny county. sam, thanks so much for being with us. you've gotten a lot of attention for this. you've not gone along with what many of your fellow gop county chairs in pennsylvania have wanted to proceed with. why have you decided that? >> i've tried to take a thoughtful approach to this as opposed to a reflexive approach. my belief is that the impeachment of president trump was designed with two objectives in mind. one was to prevent him from running from office in the future and the other was to create fissures and splits within the republican party. on the first objective they failed. on the second objective the jury is still out based on how we take and react and move forward, and i believe that our focus is best focused on the future and

that vote for pat toomey.re a couple more that are facing censure. richard burr you mentioned at the top, the north carolina republican party expected to act on that today. he's likely to be censured. he's retiring. ben sasse already facing censure in nebraska. he was actually facing censure before he cast the vote to convict and he's faced vcensure once before there, but he said he is standing up for the constitution. mitt romney, susan collins, the other senators who voted to convict being rebuked in some fashion by republicans back home, brianna. they're facing pressure from their fellow partisans back home for taking a vote they think was a vote of the conscience. >> on the house side, you had many republicans, or more republic republicans. tell us about what is happening in their home states? >> liz cheney, the number 3 house republican, leader of the conference, she was censured back home in wyoming. i saw today, brianna, adam kinzinger of illinois sent out a fundraising appeal for jaime herrera beutler.

senator pat toomey said it was the right call. republicans stood up to nixon and it worked.>> i've got to tell you, pamela, as the vote started, and i heard burr say "guilty," and i heard cassidy say "guilty," i did a flutter, i thought, my god, they're going to stand up and do it. but i was quickly disappointed, it didn't take long to hear too many "not guilties" that should have been otherwise. why those stood up at this time is many of them have no real reason politically that they cannot. some of them think it's politically smart to stand up. what happened with watergate, the republicans were very slow, there was a core of conservative republicans who were really with nixon to the bitter end. and it wasn't until the so-called smoking gun tape came out and proved beyond any question that he had lied and he had obstructed justice, did they actually go over. but there was never a full vote outside of the committee, the house judiciary committee, never a house vote even, on nixon. there was sort of a tacit agreement that if he resigned, that would end it, which it did. >> so

finally senator pat toomey added, quote, unfortunately, his behavior after the election betrayed thefidence millions of us placed in him. his betrayal of the constitution and his oath of office required conviction. pretty strong words for those who were actually willing to come out and say no. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell pivoted away from his vote and called trump morally responsible for the january attack on the u.s. capital. >> there's no question, none. president trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day, no question about it. >> january 6th was a disgrace. american citizens attacked their own government. they used terrorism to try to stop a specific piece of domestic business they did not like. >> president trump is still liable for everything he did while he was still in office. as an yordsnary citizen, he didn't get away with anything -- yes. >> mcconnell voted to acquit as we mentioned due to constitutional concerns, he said, stating, quote, we have no power to convict and disqualify a former office holder who is now a private

pat toomey among others didn't get elected with huge margins.e lower voter turnout. they oscillate. you have higher voter turn out in presidential years. how do you get enough people to turn out in a midterm year in order to get to the top, in order to get that seat? it is not going to be him obviously on the ballot but whoever the republican is. >> thank god it is not going to be him on the ballot. if he had chosen to run, we would have retired him either way. let me say this. i think we have to do two things. the first thing we have to do is, we have to have a message that resonates with working people. and not just a message that resonates with working people, but authentic mess i thinkers. my first gig was at the age of 12, washing dishes to help my mom pay bills. we are talking about raising minimum wage, student loan debt, climate change issues, these issues are real to me. authenticity is going to matter. this is what pennsylvaniians are dealing with all across the commonwealth. the second thing we have to do is bring the band back togeth

there are rumbles of censure for susan murkowski, ben sasse, pat toomey. what does this mean from a perspective? >> not very much. either of these people have just won or aren't on the ballot for many years including mitt romney. i would say this, party politics inside of states tend to be the most ardent and more active type of people. these are not every day people. ben sasse in a video said this is not what's on the minds of most people that i talk to in nebraska. if you want to censure me go away, that's fine. i would say it does illustrate that donald trump still has a control on party apparatuses across the country. other than that, richard burr is not running back, susan collins just ran, pat toomey is not running again. this is not much of anything for any of these senators. >> but wait a second. let me go back to something that you said that it shows donald trump still has a grip on some of the state parties here. here is what the pennsylvania -- one of the pennsylvania county republican chairs had to say about senator toomey's vote to convict. wa

and if pat toomey don't have the guts to not stand up for what he believes in, by god, we'll find someonewho doesn't! [ laughter ] several senators have been censured and adam kinzinger, one of the ten republicans who voted to impeach trump in the house, not only was he censured by his party in illinois, he got an angry letter from his own family. his cousin wrote, "oh my, what a disappointment you are to us and to god, we were once so proud of your accomplishments, instead you go against your christian principles and join the devil's army. you should be very proud you've lost the respect of lou dobbs, tucker carlson, sean hannity." that i agree with, he should be proud.
