of course, from a secretary sebelius, former governor george pataki, thank you both for being on withtry. this year we have seen an impressive number of black candidates running for office even in states without a long history of electing african americans statewide. one of those candidates's democratic nominee for governor in iowa, mr. deidre this year. in 2018, she ran for iowa secretary of state making history as the first black candidate to be nominated for statewide office. she is now running a campaign against trump endorsed incumbents governor kim reynolds. deirdre dizzier joins me now. -- former president trump took iowa in 2016 in 2020 -- has received former president trump's endorsement and has when a campaign embracing his policies. what do you make of the political shifts. that have taken place in your state in recent years -- >> i want to thank you for having me. we've been spending a lot of time talking about incumbents. and i feel in these moments it is incumbent upon me to defend democracy -- as you mentioned, i'm running against an individual who has been backed by th

george pataki was a three-term republican governor and joining us now, thank you for being here, howyou address crime and did the way you addressed it play a role in voters trusting you three different times to govern a state that is tough for republicans to win? >> trey, people for forget when i took office, new york was the most des dangerous state in america, people were going there and leaving, now sadly because of left wing democratic policies it is happening again, crime is going throughs roof. we change the laws, we passed or 100 different criminal justice laws holding the criminals accountable, puts them in jails. keeping them as you said, separated from the law abiding people in the state. we appointed tougher judges and parole officers, we went for the most dangerous state to the safest big state. it could happen again, but not with the leadership in new york now. trey: that was going to be my question, is that a platform that can still succeed in a state that is you know, other than you and a few other notables, it is a tough state for republicans to win statewide, can you

new york governors nelson rockefeller to george pataki, who was your contemporary when you were governor of new jersey, were all pro-choice. the roe decision itself was a 7-2 decision, which included five justices who were appointed by republican presidents. what has happened to that tradition in the republican party? >> money and the fact that we stopped voting in primaries in the way that we should, "we" being everybody, but particularly republicans, obviously. when you only have a 10% turnout, and that's what the average has been until recently -- 10% turnout of eligible voters in the primaries, that means you have the most partisan, and they tend to be a little bit on the extremes. and for a republican running in some of these districts, they have to worry. they don't worry about the general election because the way the districts are drawn, they just worry about the primary. and that's becoming even more true now in -- in the states in general elections. and i'm a supporter of ranked-choice voting. i think that's a way to force candidates to talk to everybody. that's where we've lost
