alok patel to answer some key questions.re are a lot of questions surrounding this new mutation of the coronavirus, but let's begin with why is this new variant of covid in the uk being called a new variant and not a new strain, for example? is a new variant less of a concern than perhaps a new strain? >> i think right now we're seeing the two terms being thrown around interchangeably. but what we do know, the reason we're calling it a variant is because this variant is based on mutations that happened in the virus. now, on average a sars-cov-2 virus is getting about one or two mutations a month, but it has more than that, but we do know that it acts the same way, the same rules apply and the vaccine should pretext us against the new variant. >> the vaccine, how is the vaccine rollout going so far? some respects are reporting they're getting less vaccine than they expected. you're on the front lines. what are you seeing? >> we're seeing the balance between a lot of enthusiasm and pride and you're seeing that in social media

patel. dr. patel, we want to talk about the new strain of the virus. first of all, let me ask you this. is it really a surprise? viruses mitate. >> it's not a surprise off the bat, you're correct. virus do mutate. this has been estimated to have one to two mutations per month. the reason this is getting headlines is it has over a dozen. what has everybody kind of, i don't want to say concerned but paying attention is potential mutations in the spike protines or parts of the virus that make it available to infect people, jump around from person to person, and potentially evade our immune systems. >> but are we seeing any evidence at all yet that this is in fact more transmissible or if you get it, is it deadlier, if you will, more potent? >> now, i know what i said probably evoked a little bit of a fear response in the control room, but there is no evidence that it is more deadly or it's causing more severe disease. there's an early thought that it may be more transmissible, but again, i think it's really important that people don't speculate too early
