i have respect for david patraeus. i don't know the details.e served his country dave -- he sacrificed a great deal. i think it is a tragedy. there's also another story here. lou: that story, because we learned very quickly that he will certainly not the apparently testifying before congress next wednesday in closed-door meetings, three separate investigations. what do you make of it? >> the fact that he has been under investigation which he discussed today by the fbi raises questions about other things he has said and done recently that were kind of lofty, i thought. for example, he apparently gave a briefing to members of congress worry said that the video cost -- the hijacked spontaneous protest and led to the shooting and killing in benghazi. >> the idea of him being a straight shooter was called into question. >> feeling pressure to conform to the party line. he was under investigation. crazier things that happened. lou: that fbi has had scrutiny as the result of a separate and unrelated investigation there were conducting. this looks like

patraeus was the c.i.a. director and resigned after saying he had an affair reportedly with his biographer paula broadwell. new information shows the f.b.i. had been looking into broadwell for allegedly sending threatening e-mails to a family friend of patraeus. >> the initial complaint was harassment. it could have gone to e-mail hacking but there was no substantive information that this had anything to do with national security. >> it wasn't until last week the white house was made aware of the situation. some lawmakers say they should have known about the probe. >> it doesn't add up that the f.b.i. would be carrying on this type of investigation without bringing it to the president or highest levels of the white house. >> the senate intelligence committee chairwoman says she plans to investigate the f.b.i. >> this is something that could have had a effect on national security i think we should have been told. >> this comes at the same time that those meetings had been scheduled on capitol to ask questions

patraeus's mistress was sending her threatening e-mails. she called a friend of the ca, who tipped off a couple of congressmen, including minority leader eric cantor. david petraeus lost his job as the head of the cia. analysts it was all caught up in what has been labeled the military adulteress complex. does that about summed it up? >> yes, it does. it is really unfortunate. it is not the people have never had affairs in high positions in government. cia directors have even had affairs in the past. and we did not fire them over it. but these are different times. my view is that it should have been investigated, because there was a to -- a potential compromise of national security. if they found nothing, and so far they have found nothing, then patraeus should have been read the riot act by the president and should have stayed and none of us would have known. but i have to say that everyone i know in high office in the military establishment tells me i'm wrong. they say you cannot have that kind of person in that high of a position at demo
