patricia grew up with segregation and injustices which she writes about. she spent many countless hours in the nashville public library. it was her family life that was bountiful and flowing with tales told by her story telling grandfather. raised with love of reading and oral tradition. graduated from tennessee state and degree in english in 1964. she married her childhood friend on december 12. they are the parents of fredrick and twins robert and john. her education continued with a master's degree in early childhood literature, and programming in 1975 from webster university. patricia has a successful career as a teacher and children's book editor. she changed careers to become a full time writer of children and young adult books. her goal is to create books for and about african-americans. i write because there is a need to have books for, by and about the african-american experience and how we helped to develop this country. i present to you patricia makinsik heart of literacy. >> i am from st. louis, missouri. a lot of you think i have said it in co

jamie and patricia talked about being so stunned. all they could think about was trying to save the children. they covered them with their bodies, threw them on the ground and when they heard the shooting slow they ran to save their children. interestingly enough jamie and patricia are boyfriend and girlfriend, both 25. it is today, brian when jamie realized what could have been lost, how valuable, how important, how fragile life is. it is today that he asked patricia to marry him in the hospital and it is today that she said knowing what she could have lost, she said yes. >> another side of this coin. we don't want to judge anyone or anything after this tragedy but a whole lot of parents woke up this morning across this country and said, what were young kids doing at that movie at that hour in that theater? >> you know, i think the answer to that is really something we all really know the answer to and that is that, you know, parents especially young parents need a break like everyone else. and so they were going because they heard

just moments ago, i spoke with jarell brooks and patricia legarreta.hen he realized she was injured, he helped with her two young children. thank you for joining us. we appreciate you coming on this morning. i understand this is the first time you have seen each other since the terror unfolded. patricia, you said after you were shot, you couldn't remember what happened. but you heard a man's voice. you believe that was jarell. you believe he saved your life and the life of your daughter. so what do you have to say to him this morning? >> thank you. i mean, i just can't even -- i don't know where i would be. i don't remember exactly everything that happened. but i thank him. i mean, having him there next to me, knowing that there was somebody there is just -- it -- it's comforting knowing that somebody was willing to help. >> i'm sure it is. do you remember what he was telling you? >> no, i remember hearing him scream and saying, oh, god, when he got hit. and i remember him, like, continuing to talk, what was being said, i mean, i just -- i can't rememb

what do you recall when you saw patricia and her daughters?as seeing them two on the floor. i noticed she had her son in her arms. her youngest daughter held to her left arm. i was trying fguide her out. i said, we have to go. she said, i'm -- here are my two kids. my first reaction was to guide them to the door. i pushed them up. as i was pushing them, i got hit on my thigh. i thing that was what she got in her right leg. >> did you know initially you were shot? >> initially, no. i felt sharp pain. i tried to move my left leg, i went down, i looked at my hand, noticed it was bleeding. it got real at that moment. >> what was the environment like around you? sheer chaos? everybody trying to dash out the doors? >> yes. >> patricia, your daughter, you said she fell. your 4-year-old daughter, you shielded her. tell us about that frightening moment. >> you just -- all i could think of was, i mean, just -- just blocking her. shielding her, making sure she didn't get hurt. she was so disoriented. i remember her looking around. she was asleep, just lo

patric patricia, what is merkel coming to this meeting to achieve, patricia?i think what they are going to do is to digest basically what happened during the euro summit last thursday, last friday and how that was perceived and how to then implement these steps taken that have seemed very positively by the market and also by many commentators. the implementation part of what was agreed last week is something that they will discuss. on the other hand it is a routine meeting and perhaps will be looking at the eu finance ministers summit due next week as well. but i think they will try to really drill down how austerity and also growth measures can be really implemented into the economy going forward. so as far as some of the sources i speak to actually think the meeting is going to also be about youth unemployment in italy and how german companies can help to sort that out. how it can be a bit easier for perhaps italian unemployed young people to go from italy and find work in germany. settle there and actually feel also happy without the italian families around
