joining me from atlanta is my friend, the lovely patricia murphy. -- by people, me -- tend to think of john boehner as a hapless tanner. but behind the scenes, when it comes to his own power, he seems to be an arm-twister and vaguely ruthless. >> he is definitely an arm-twister. i think that he has reserved his ruthless side until now. i think that he knew that that tea party group that came in that made him speaker in the first place, that was such a wild bunch of people who just had so much energy to burn off. and i think a lot of rebellion in their hearts that they need to sort of process through their systems. and then along comes ted cruz and you have the whole thing going on in the senate. and i think that john boehner knew that he was not going to be able to control this group of tea partiers until they really controlled themselves and had circumstances start to control them. and so ted cruz -- john boehner let him go ahead and shut down the government. that didn't work. and we've seen a lot of tea party challenges come up and completely flop

joining me now is founder of citizen jane politics and daily beast contributor patricia murphy. you especially when we talk about things we don't understand happening in southern races. >> welcome to the south. >> exactly. so how did thom tillis do this? they were running neck and neck a few weeks ago. now he leads by a healthy margin and is expected to win. but is this truly a story of a -- of the establishment candidate triumphing over the fringe candidate? >> well, a couple of things to note here. this race is actually tightening up a little bit. a ppp poll came out this morning showing greg brannon closing that gap by nine points with thom tillis. tillis is right at 40%. he needs 40% plus one vote to get through without a primary. greg brannon has been able to bring in people like rand paul, has been able to knock thom tillis down quite a bit. in this last week, nobody saw that coming. but what has thom tillis done right? he has spent a ton of money. he obviously is the big money republican candidate here. there's also more than $10 million of money coming in from outside th

joining me sally stone and patricia murphy. you. >> good morning, carol. >> good morning. >> sally, mrs. clinton was supposed to take it easy for a year. here she is giving speeches, bill is standing up for her. will this hurt her chances in 2016 if she decides to run? >> nobody knows, right? hillary clinton right now, if she does end up running, all the polls show she has a higher lead than any non-incumbent candidate this early out ever, since polls have been done. so we don't know if it's going to hurt. there's two things we do know. one, that folks like deval patrick who are thinking of running if hillary doesn't get in, this sure is inconvenient for him, right? he'd like to know, he'd like to know so he can start putting his name out and campaigning. everybody is holding back. that's number one. number two, what we also don't know is should hillary decide not to run and say deval patrick and others get into the race, she could have ultimately helped them by taking so much of the heat this far out that then this -- we have

a cnn political commentator and opinion columnist for "the new york times" and patricia murphy is founderelcome to you both. >> thanks for having us. >> good morning. >> thanks for being here. i listened to grimes victory speech and came out to katy perry's "roar." she personified the war on women theme. are establishment republicans worried? >> i think that the war on women frame the democrats used in the last election where it was arguments about abortion and contraception and so on is less likely to be important in this campaign because kentucky is a pretty socially conservative state and grimes is more likely to be on the defensive on issues like abortion. i think the gender card more generally is clearly something mcconnell is worried about. if you listen to his speech, which he didn't come out to katy perry and he's not necessarily the most charismatic speech giver but there was a lot of talk about women, about his wife, about his family and women in kentucky hurt by obamacare. i don't think there's any question from his perspective being not just an establishment figure but an olde
