governor patrick is seven point as head in the latest poll. this is massachusetts, a place where republican scott brown scored an upset victory in january. it is a closely watched race, despite these poll numbers. anything can happen as we move forward. there's an interesting twist. independents, tim cahill the treasurer running he's run into a number of problems he's trailing far behind in the poll that is the least of his worries. his running mate pulled out earlier this month. he's under investigation he and his staff, there are allegations that he used his position as treasurer to run taxpayer funded lottery ads to boost his run towards the governor's office. the attorney general looking into that. this race closely watched because in is a place where political analysts believe president obama may be help to help governor patrick tied with him politically and supports a lot of his positions. >> there aren't a lot of states that barack obama can go to and be helpful to democrats. massachusetts is one. for duvall patrick to win november 2nd,

patrick opman is there at the san jose mine. patrick, tell us about this. first of all, why is it rotating, why couldn't they make it bigger for the miners who might have been bigger in size? tell us about some of these details. >> reporter: well, the miners, unfortunately, ali, had to get smaller, many of them, to fit in this capsule. we're told some of them lost as much as 20 pounds. if there has ever been a reason to go on a diet, these men had it. every inch that has to be drilled here takes so much time. so they drilled what they call the biggest hole possible to fit in this capsule, which is a tight fit for all these men. it will be extremely clause tree phobic for men who already surrendered through clause tree phobic conditions. this will take place over my shoulder, the site of plan b drilling site. we saw that drill leave here just a while ago, ali, got a hero's welcome. they removed that drill because now it's -- it was over the mine shaft hole, and that's -- it will be the hole, the entrance to this mine. this morning they already lowered down t

patrick oppmann joining us now.'m checking the monitoring here in the studio, and i can see there is an update going on right now. have you been able to learn anything from this briefing? >> reporter: yes. the updates continue to happen here. there was celebration over the weekend but rescuers got back to work quickly. the latest this morning, they finished the casing about 300 meters or so. that's going to create a buffer and fortify the mine shaft. they are getting ready to the point to put a rescue capsule down into the mine shaft. they are hoping to have the men coming up on wednesday. despite the long hours, rescuers have put in, they are up to the final challenge. >> this is the most important task that we ever had in our life, so i think the group, the human group, easier to motivate than i ever faced in my life. >> reporter: officials concede the rescue will be an ordeal for the miners. one man at a time, they will be hoisted to the surface by the phoenix capsule and rescuers will watch them ascend over a li

patrick, let me start with you. you do have to be 18 to buy cigarettes.nds and it's not as if people don't understand now that smoking is bad for you. is this an example of government just really putting its nose some place where it doesn't need to be? >> really not at all. and this whole argument between the prag notist that does what works and i'm more in the favor of the pragmatist in this particular case. the tobacco industry had its gleaming package of cigarettes behind counters, previously on the count top at child eye level next to the candy. kids didn't know it was paid advertising and it was right in their face where they could easily steal the cigarettes and get addicted. the tobacco industry would just replace any stolen cigarettes. now, they're behind the counter in most states, but still paid advertising space or giving steep discounts to get the store owners to keep those displays highly visible making tobacco look like a regular american product to our kids. i don't feel that this, you know, the tobacco industry has used the first amendment

patrick oppmann is at the hospital where the miners are being treated. what is their condition? >> reporter: anderson, there's 17 miners in this hospital behind us, and we're told today

patrick, what are you hearing from the hospital?> reporter: more of the miners are arriving and the photojournalist and i saw several of them being wheeled in. and what a scene it was. they've let the public, the towns people of copiapo, they've lined up from keeping us getting too close, and wheeled the men in. as you would imagine, anderson, they got a standing ovation. people were going absolutely crazy. the miners were just as interested in us and the crowd here as we were. we're playing video from when luis urzua came to the surface. that was the reaction of some of the family in the lobby when they saw the final miner, again, scenes of incredible emotion, incredible passion, and for these people to finally have all miners above ground, there is a mining community -- sorry, go ahead? >> patrick, you're saying you saw some of the miners being brought in recently. where are they being brought in from? are they being brought in from the sort of field hospital down near the mine? why would they just be coming in now? >> reporter: y

patrick ottoman is joining us on the phone right now. what's going on, patrick, right now?, we're seeing practice runs being done. they're gearing up for this rescue. they've done quite a bit today in terms of lining the mine hole, doing that first test that chad discussed, lowering the capsule down to almost the mine floor. we've seen help coicopters taki off and landing. that's how they'll transport the miners to the hospital. it's quite a large operation. they want to get every detail just so. >> how are they going to determine the order of the miners leaving, patrick? >> you know, it's become something of a point of contention. the government officials want to go like this. they want the five most technically adept miners, the miners who are quite competent, have been in good shape throughout this ordeal, to go first. if there are any issues in the capital ride, those are the koi kinds of men that can troubleshoot it. they'll be on their own. the next ten or so men will be men who have had problems with the claus trophobia, men suffering from hypertension and diabetes.

patrick, you're saying you saw some of the miners being brought in recently.being brought in from? are they being brought in from the sort of field hospital down in the mine? why would they just be coming in now? >> reporter: yes. yes. because what happens is after they're taken from the mine, they have about a two-hour checkup at the field hospital. then they're allowed some time with their families. then they're put on a helicopter, flown here. there's a military base just about a half mile away from us. then they're driven in from that military base, that military helipad, the copiapo regional hospital where they'll spend the next few days. they're letting the public see this brief glimpse of them as they're wheeled in. they're wheeled in in hospital scrubs. they have those dark, thick, ugly sunglasses on, and they're looking around, very curious as to who all these people are claping and cheering them on as they're wheeled into the hospital. they'll be here for a few days getting a full barrage of tests. medical officials wanted to make sure they're health

patrick is on the line with us. patrick. hello to you once again. still, this is just the next phase of the rescue. >> that's actually correct. and it's a very important phase. this is something they've been trying to do now for over a month, drill down to these men, and they've had a very difficult time doing it, throwing three drills at this problem. you heard the president say there were certain days where they could not breakthrough this hard chilean mountain rock, but that's what they did at 8:01 this morning. the drill team broke through. and we heard as much celebration among the drillers as with the family members. the miners, we've been told, are taking this very calm. they're serene. they're preparing for what comes next. what comes next is going to be as difficult an ordeal as they've already gone through. once the hole is properly prepared, the rescue capsule will be sent down. two initial rescue workers. one is described as an expert mine rescue personnel person who will go down with a chilean special forces navy member. and they'll ess

>> patrick oppmann, appreciate it. dr.joins me now, assistant professor at emory university medical school. she was with us last night. dr. manning, it sounds like the conditions of these miners is not very serious. there is acute pneumonia, obviously serious for that miner, and skin lesions on the eye. how would that have happened? >> they were in such a damp quarter. it was very dark in the area, and then you must remember, it was very, very hot down there. 85 to 90 degrees. and so some of those infections that have been reported are what we call fungal infections. any infection caused by a fungus really thrives in that type of environment. think of things like yeast or athlete's foot or even jock itch, those are things you'll see in the warm, moist, damp circumstances. >> were you surprised to see i mean, how well they all looked, walking around just fine, none visibly out of breath? they all looked like they were in pretty good condition. >> i'll tell you, anderson, many people were so surprised after 17 days these gen

patrick's day. he always went on is some patrick's de horse. the pictures were always so far away you could not tell who he was. he would always tell his head to the left with a very tall hat so the kids could always pick out which one was he. in fact, he could not swim, but he rode his horse to save someone's life who was drowned and offer the tale of his horse. if he had gotten off the horse, he would have drowned and there would have been to casualties. i would like to thank the widows and orphans and everybody who looks after the family members of those who were killed in the line of duty. it was a powerful political figure in san francisco who was driving under the influence of alcohol and struck and killed my great-grandfather. the kind of swept it under the rug and did not take care of the family and did not offer the pension to the family. in fact, he is buried at holy cross in an unmarked grave, which i am rectifying myself. that being said, for all the families that are taken care of today, thank you so much for all of them. can't you
