patrick: absolutely.ou should not give people the ability to withdraw arbitrary amounts from your account. emily: who are stripe's biggest customers? patrick: we could not possibly disclose the size of our biggest users. emily: can you talk about the typical annual payment volume for a typical customer? patrick: it's from somebody starting their first project some experiment, people running many businesses on the stripe. the prototypical company at the frontlines, right through to the biggest companies in the world. people processing tens of aliens of dollars a year. part of the promise of the platform as you can go from having that nascent idea wanting to try out the side project to being one of the largest companies in the world and you can see that forms all throughout whereas you started out on this system and have to migrate to this system. all of those changes are complicated and awkward whereas stripe provides a uniform platform. emily: is it fair to say stripe processes tens of billions of dollars

one is named patrick and one is named fatuma, and patrick is the weapon entrepreneur for whom this book is named. clay water brick points to a story of patrick, this entrepreneur that i met in uganda several years ago, about a decade ago, and he told me his story as follows. he explained how years earlier he had fled the northern area of the country because a rebel group had attacked his village, taken most of his family -- i'll be careful with my language because of the little ones -- and he had basically fled with almost nothing except his brother. and he settled in a village on the border of kenya and you ugaa with this brother, unschooled, orphaned, hungry, homeless. he didn't have much of anything. he had some distant cousins that he found there, and they wanted to be close to family, any family at all, so that's where they settled. and patrick had to figure out what to do to support him and his brother. sadly, this kind of situation isn't all that rare around the world, to have to wake up every day and figure out how you're going to feed yourself and your loved ones. and patrick t

patrick: david and i share a lot of the same nightmares.t is not appropriate to have the same currency for these different countries that need different medications. germany needs a stronger economy, much like china, i would add. you have other countries along the periphery that need a weaker currency, and because they are locked in this currency embrace, there is no other way, other than fiscal policy, to resolve these internal imbalances. so, the only possible alternative is for them to try to export this imbalance. the way they export this imbalances by engaging in qe, devaluing the euro, and essentially exporting that imbalance to the united states to read and we have seen a growing trade deficit with europe as one of the major headwinds to u.s. growth. joe: all right, david, patrick, thank you so much for being here. scarlet: everyone is counting on the u.s. consumer at the end. which of the world's richest men has lost $7 billion just because of the collapse in gold prices? that coming up. ♪ scarlet: i am scarlet fu. joe: i am joe wei

patrick, tempting to say not much can happen next two weeks.ave three things you feel investors have to do or not do before they go away. start with the first one. >> yeah. absolutely. some ways checking out for next couple weeks or six months might not be bad strategy. first thing i would say don't overreact too headlines. headlines are what already happened. you shouldn't make decisions on yesterday's news. you should make decisions on what happens next. second thing i would say, don't be too negative. there is line bears and pundits, one out of the last 20 financial crises. things are not usually bad as they seem. usually the market goes up over time. last thing, don't be too confident in your ability to forecast what happens next. i don't know what will happen next two weeks or next six months. meese people that think they know what is going to happen, they're guessing even though they sound very confident. buy cheap stocks. hold for longer periods of time. that is the biggest thing to do as opposed to things to avoid over time. liz: would
