patrick did you want to jump in there?> absolutely, as mike was saying there is a different atmosphere here and the pope spoke perhaps more slowly than a president would and talking about his familiarity with english and the feel was there and we were watching it on camera. he was engaged as a pastor who knows that his religious views have political implications. he didn't get down into the nitty-gritty of the political implications but the themes and the concepts talking about the common good, talking about the dignity of every human life. as mike was saying before alluding to the church's position on abortion and where the tone of pope francis is so different from the tone of his predecessor and 16th would be ex explicit and he talked about protecting human life at every stage and preserving the family and you and i may think of those as code words for the catholic positions but i think they reflect part of his pastoral strategy and knows that everyone else knows what the catholic positions on those topics is and he want

patrick's cathedral. pope francis will be the fourth pope ever to step foot inside the historic cathedral in midtown. >> eyewitness news anchor sade baderinwa is there. she has more on what we can expect. >> reporter: david and liz, it's a glorious day out here. you couldn't ask for better weather. there is not a cloud in the sky. the excitement is building here. many people took off work to be here. some people took their kids out of school. for them, they want a chance to witness history, to be able to see the pontiff in person. for them it will be a magical moment. we have been talking all week about the security leading up to the event. this is the biggest security event ever for new york city. we saw the police commissioner here a few moments ago surveying the area. there are 6,000 police officers dedicated to this event. we have canine units out. secret service is the lead law enforcement agency here. they are walking up and down the streets. we are locked in position. people are lining the streets

patrick.this is not a long stretch right here and some people have managed to get in there and we talked to some people who got into these positions at 6:00 this morning so he will have some public access right here. >> you wonder -- >> reporter: and you wonder if he'll even get an opportunity to do what we saw him do on constitution avenue. the guards brought babies up for him to kiss and that sort of thing. >> reporter: exactly. my guess is not so much tonight, but tomorrow you will see a lot of that all around central park, they're shutting down a third of central park so he can do that very thing and that is going to be a logistical challenge for security around central park because you will really have hundreds of thousands of people in that park tomorrow. and that is going to give him the opportunity to do a lot of that then. >> watching that scene -- >> reporter: people weren't really sure if he was going to be in the popemobile. >> that is fifth avenue in manhattan and a familiar scene

patrick's church. he will serve 300 homeless people outside that church. you can see the excitement. he is trying to get close to the people, posing for selfies and making himself available to anyone in the crowd. you know he has a soft spot for children when he has that chance. there will be a large tent providing shelter for more than 50 tables to feed 300 homeless there and the representative for the pontiff said he will be acting in many ways like the matter d -- at this. there will be carrots, potato rolls, plenty of stuff to enjoy. about 70 volunteers from catholic charities are there to help out. there will be music playing, a very festive moment, of course, the focus on much of the trip is toward the homeless, the needy and here he is having a chance to meet people up close and in person. amazing. we will continue to follow the latest on the trip toward that moment where he does participate in that event. >>> again, as we watch this, we are less than five hours from the pope's expected arrival

patrick's. give us some idea who was lucky enough to get inside st. patrick's with the pontiff. >> reporter: well, it's a pretty spectacular sight here at st. patrick's cathedral and it has been since the pope arrived not too long ago. he came down fifth avenue after getting out of his motorcade and transferred to that open air popemobile. he slowly made his way down fifth avenue with thousands of people who had lined the streets to see him and then he arrived right here at st. patrick's. he first got out of the popemobile, was greeted by the mayor, governor and then the crowd erupted in cheer. we were wondering if he was going to interact with the folks outside. he didn't. he gave them a wave. they chanted and cheered and said francisco and he made his way inside those beautiful bronze doors inside st. patrick's cathedral behind me. >> don't worry about it. he will interact with those people. when he first got here, they want to keep him on schedule. he will be out there pressing the flesh and

one is named patrick and one is named fatuma, and patrick is the entrepreneur for who this book is named, actually. "clay, water, brick" points to a story of patrick, this entrepreneur that i met in uganda several years ago, about a decade ago. and he told me his story as follows. he explained how years earlier he had fled the northern area of the country because a rebel group had attacked his village, taken most of his family -- can i'll be careful with my language because of the little ones -- and he had basically fled with almost nothing except his brother. and he settled in a village on the boarder of kenya and uganda with this brother, unschooled, orphaned, hungry, homeless. he didn't have much of anything. he had some distant cousins that he found there, and they wanted to be close to family, any family at all, so that's where they settled. patrick had to figure out what to do to support him and his brother. sadly, this kind of situation isn't all that rare around the world, to have to wake up every day and figure out how you're going to feed yourself and your loved ones. and patri
