it's a grim question, patrick. but right now the bahamian authorities say the death count fatalities is at seven. seven people. i know that number is expected to rise. but based on what you've seen in your brief tour of the island, will that number rise dramatically? >> reporter: well, that number doesn't include anybody from grand bahama. i think they're only talking about people from abaco. doesn't include any deaths i'm aware of from grand bahama. i spoke to multiple people yesterday that said they had seen bodies or they had missing family members. or that they'd seen family members taken away from the storm. that man howard armstrong who was just absolutely in shock and himself nearly died and showed us the bruises all over his body from being beaten nearly to death by the floating debris, he said his neighbor had been calling to him and his wife all nagt long and they were not able to get to their neighbor. and after his wife passed away, he swam out of the house, somehow made it out of the house. he went ove

patrick oppmann and his team rode out the storm there.when you were looking at the bahamas? >> it's devastating. i've been in category 5 hurricanes. i was in michael last year in florida. and usually these hurricanes come through. know just being a chaser and knowing what it's like to be inside of one of those storms and i haven't been inside one of those but just to see it over the bahamas for 24 hours. it was heart breaking. i knew exactly what was happening. >> i told patrick i was relieved every time i talked to him on tv. i knew him and his team were doing okay. i was concerned about the duration of it. talk to me about the mainland u.s. now. this storm has been unique. it's just crawled up the coast. you and i were both in southern florida four days ago following this. what's been unique about chasing dorian? >> i mean, it's definitely the most unique thing has been its strength. it's definitely the strongest storm i've ever tracked in my chasing career. i spent time in orlando yesterday watching the storm, how close is the going to

patrick, please stay safe. as hurricane dorian lashes the bahamas, florida is bracing as this mammoth storm is set to start impacting that state as soon as tomorrow morning. that's when those of you in florida could get those storm-force winds, the hurricane stretches far and it's wide and it's moving at a snail's pace. just about 5 miles per hour. meaning the dangerous rain, the winds, the storm surge, could continue in florida for days. martin county sheriff gave this dire warning. >> we are within 20 miles of an apocalyptic hurricane coming ashore on the treasure coast. if it does what the models are predicting, we will be okay. >> within 20 miles of an apocalyptic hurricane, he says. cnn's rosa flores joins us now from daytona beach. the national hurricane center just issued a hurricane watch and a storm surge watch for parts of daytona beach. how are residents there bracing for this storm? >> reporter: well, officials are letting people know that a mandatory evacuation will be issued tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

patrick's joining me now. i can only imagine, patrick, the accounts that you have heard. what are you seeing there now? >> we're seeing just utter devastation, destruction. the only reason we haven't been able to show you these pictures before is we couldn't get here. only yesterday afternoon were the waters low enough we drove through two spots where a car was almost completely swallowed in the water that still remained. and this is what roads look like in east grand island bahama. this is the hardest hit area. category 5 winds came through here. storm surge of 20 feet or more. and you can see where the road is now and where the road was is the difference from my feet to above my knees. it is just absolutely torn off sections of road, whole houses. and we were talking before about the death count. we know from residents that yesterday they recovered five deceased people from this small town. town of only 300 people. high rock in the eastern bahamas. probably can't find it on the map. it's certainly not on the map now. but the residents say another 14 people who rode out

our patrick oppmann is saying the sun is shining there.e's hoping to get some contact from the bahamian government rescue efforts today as well as the u.s. coast guard. any sense when you'll be able to land planes on those islands? >> we're assessing the airports. i flew over a number of airports in abacos. unfortunately it looks like the airports are under water and some you were able to land a aircraft there but the roads were inaccessible. we have been able to land our helicopters on some of the land to rescue some of the folks who need to be medically evacuated. >> what's your sense of the need there on those islands from what you're hearing from your personnel? >> yeah, i think the need is going to be significant. like i said the population of abacos roughly around 20,000. i think grand bahamas 50,000. i think authorize going to be a significant amount of need in terms of medical needs, sheltering needs, security needs, and then food for folks -- food and water for the affected population. >> admiral scott bushman, thank you for being

patrick ottman is live for us in freeport, bahamas, with the latest. patrick? >> reporter: good morning, again. grand bahamas getting lashed by the hurricane strength winds all night long. this is what we have heard in the dark here because much if not all of this island is without power. it is a haunting and frankly terrifying scene. i'm just going to step out of the way. cameraman is going to show you how the hurricane is whipping around the very tall pines. these are pine trees that survived hurricane matthew three years ago. that was a cat kbor ri-- cat at the -- category 4 storm. it has stalled out over us. we have yet to see the worst that dorian is going to do to this island. certainly when the sun comes up we will have a better sense of damage. it is absolutely impossible, guys, to go out and see what has taken place here because the winds are so strong. we are very concerned about that storm surge. over 20 feet we are expected to see here, 20 feet of storm surge probably by the end of today. it's a terrifying thought because there are islands around us

patrick has been with us over the last couple days. he's now at the airport there and patrick is with us on the phone. as i understand it, what you are finding there is just devastation? >> we after two days of trying are finally able to get into the freeport airport. we saw video the other night of waves crashing into it, that were taken into the height of the hurricane. but the level of devastation is breathtaking. there are no walls left to the airport, the ceiling has been crashed in, we saw part of a plane that had been picked up and deposited in the middle of the terminal. the runway field is now a debris field. it would be impossible until all that debris could be cleared to land or for a plane to take off. why is this important? this island, we are cut off now. there are many people who are injured and need to be medevaced. they cannot be medevaced by plane. and then we need water, food, everything brought in. nothing can come in or out of that airport, it is a ruin. there are the fences are knocked down of the walls -- there's

you saw patrick there in a rescue boat. i want to go first to tom sater outfront live at the weather center. what is the latest on the track of dorian yan now that it's moving again. >> well, erin, right now it's at 6-mile-per-hour. that's still considered slow for a tropical system system. but it's better than station ari. let me start with grand bahama island because they are going in the first night of darkness. if you notice on the infrared. thunderstorms are coming into the region. that's going to hurt some of the rescue and search efforts.e wine keeping that high water like the images you just showed moments ago from receding. when you have the airfield here and free port here and the inuntags of water as long as the winds continue, the water can't recede. the airport had five to six feet just completely submerging it. once the waters recede then they can inspect the airfield just to get aircraft in there because that's what we need. again now that we seere concerns, not just for the carolinas but florida still in the
