[applause] >> thank you so much. thank you, johnnie. thank you dan, thank you louise for those remarkable comments and thank you, all of you who are here tonight on a beautiful night, one of those rare nights in washington d.c. where you're not sweating to death from the weather that i remember all too well. i'm deeply honored by the gathering here, and those of you here by senator, by founders of the foundation, christine emba, and "the washington post." i would be remiss if i wouldn't mention that i was honored by generations of students who i was able to mingle with and as a teacher and someone who is maybe moving toward, slightly more toward the end of my career, this is really what gives me hope is to have these just numbers of students, these growing number of students who i saw launching into the world and having an impact and i just want to thank you, all of you, from princeton days, from georgetown days and now from notre dame

the lesson or one of the many great lessons of the work that patrick deneen and others have done thathampions as we are in an era of needing to impose political power in one of the things we can do that, a relatively cheerful way and part of an administration that smaller as a resultt of what you are doing. project 2025. >> to the question i think i will echo what patrick said i'm not sure the difference between liberalism and total chaos. i think when the most interesting things about the book that you'll get to read is the description and which actually there or common norms and sitting across time and seeking wisdom that's not chaos. it may notit be relevant and ite not the political philosophy but there is knowledge there andso affect liberalism is standing in directly in contrast without so that's the question. as a closing note i think one thing that j.d. senator vance said if it's under discussed the idea of the mixedhi constitution the post-wave of the future, the mix is important. we a lot of time talking about how elites have better ideas about how to run the country in the

one thinks of, among others, formule, patrick, deneen and dc. all these philosophers that the distinctively modern or metaphysics informs the political speculations of the founders compromises, the practical arrangements that they put in place. so the question naturally arises who has this at least relatively the right? the fusion+ whom i was praising earlier with complete. or these neo integrals who might be more sensitive. the issues i've just been raising is american style liberalism with or repugnant to catholic christianity. no adequate answer to that question would. take me again far beyond the confines of this presentation. but at the risk sounding a tad facile, i would venture to respond both. my position is that the american polity is fundamentally moderate in form and inspiration, but remains conditioned by certain deeply held religious assumptions. it's a hobbesian lockean system, but with overtones of the christian worldview that still haunted the minds, the founders, and perhaps more importantly shaped the souls of the first america
