patrick murphy, thank you so much for coming on the show.us what your reaction is to this historic day. >> well, thanks, randi, for having me on. today is an incredible step on a journey to end discrimination in our military and in our country. today is a testament to the hard work of heroes like lieutenant colonel victor furbok, notre dame graduate combat fighter pilot actually when i was in iraq in 2003-2004, second airborne division he was actually controlling the skies in baghdad. he's aan american hero, yet someone found out that he had a loved one back at home, a man, and they turned him in and unfortunately he had desk duty. they took him off those sorties. and that's wrong. there are so many others that were thrown out just like victor fairnbalk. that's why we fought so hard to make today a reality. >> how do you expect this to go through? i mean, in terms of how will it be accepted and do you anticipate any problems in implementing the new policy? >> i don't expect any problems, randi. you know why? because we have the best military

patrick murphy is joining me now.his week on don't ask, don't tell. you led the charge on this issue in congress, despite the fact that people said it would damage your career politically and cost you re-election. now you have seen it come toed and. what's your reaction? >> well, tom, thank you for having me on. this week is a special week. it was an incredible step to right an unbelievable wrong the past 18 years. to know 13,000 men and women in uniform, those who are willing to take a bullet for our freedom and the safety of our country were thrown out of our military just because they were gay is just wrong. it is one small step toward true equality in our country. >> as a former u.s. army captain and served in iraq and you are a straight ally. what does the significance of the repeal mean for your friends in the service? >> very simply, they don't have to lie about who they are any longer. that when someone says who are you writing a letter home to, they don't have to lie about who that person is. it is critically

features our next two guests congressman patrick murphy and lieutenant colonel victor fahernbach.wed you guys this from the under secretary of defense and it officially repeals "don't ask, don't tell." as i hand this to you, because you have fought it, how does that feel? how does it feel when you're looking at it? >> it's pretty awesome. yeah, to know that patriotic americans can now serve our country and they don't have to lie about who they are as a person is a pretty special day in american history. >> let's talk to heroes like you, decorated hero like you. when you look at that, what do you think? what goes through your mind? >> this means more than my retirement paperwork, i think. that to me, i had my ceremony a couple weeks ago, an end to my personal battle. but today as patrick mentioned, this means the fight's over for everyone. there are 65,000 others out there today that can put on their uniform and drive on to their base and go into work and they no longver to hide or lie. they can serve with dignity and honor. >> did you ever think this day would come? >> absolutely

it features the hero of repeal, patrick murphy and his battle.uck me the most people like myself and others were able to show our faces in part of the documentary and tell our stories but the most striking part was there are probably about ten service members that were really telling their stories in shadows through the documentary and that hit home. it shows that 65,000 members of currently serving right now and they continually have to live this lie and look over their shoulders and that's why it marks a great occasion because they will stand proud next tuesday knowing they can continue to serve with dignity, honor and integrity. >> in your heart, victor, did you think this day would come? >> you know, i said that at my retirement ceremony a couple weeks ago is i never imagined when this ordeal began for me personally three years ago that i would ever see this day. i couldn't be happier and i especially couldn't be happier for the service members that will continue to serve. >> we want to thank you. you showed up with a good looking tie today,

that is the inimitable words of mike murphy. patrick, i can only go to you with that. but what is going on? i got a sense -- i get a sense, in the media world here, which there are not a whole lot of republicans floating around, but there are a few i suppose, all worried, trouble in river city, we've go the to stop this guy perry because we've got to get the right nominee. what's going on in your erstwhile political party? >> i think they're scared to death of rick perry, because, one, he's not one of them. and second, there's this fear that's existed since goldwater, if we give him the nominee, he'll explode and take down the ticket with him and he'll also lose the senate and house when we got this golden opportunity. chris, this is the battle we've had, 1968 with richard nixon. it was look, you nominate nixon, you lose. rockefeller's guys were putting out polls, you nominate nixon, you lose. go back to taft. we want to win. we've got eisenhower. this is a battle endlessly in the republican party for the nomination. the problem with rick perry, for the establishment,

patrick's day parade in which mrs. mcpeek derided the fact that they were making fun of the irish in the united states, you know, things like i survived the kelly murphy family gathering, things like that. and they wrote letters poking fun at what i thought was a couragous op ed piece. so this is in response to the irish americans who don't feel the pride that they should. and please excuse if i manhandle the irish manner of speaking. this is a joke told to me by one of my friends. he said that an american, an irish american, was golfing with his wife on a weekend. and he hit the ball into the rough. went looking for it. all of a sudden, a leprechaun jumped up. we're back to the leprechaun theme. he said, top of the morning to you, lad. he says, you're a leprechaun. he says, yes, i am, and you have 3 wishes. three wishes? he says, yes. you have 3 wishes. i want to be a par golfer.. he says, no problem. from now on, par and under. he says, i want a porsche. he says, when you go home tonight, there will be a porsche in your garage. and he says, i want a million dollars. he says, done. when you go to the bank on monday, there will be a million dollars in
