. >> we're joined by former congressman patrick murphy, veteran of the iraq war. you're one of the first people we talked to about this trial and the issue ptsd might play in this trial. what is your reaction to this verdict tonight? >> lawrence, it's a sad day. i mean, you have a marine, two marines who were killed. another marine now who is going to spend the rest of his life in prison. i'm glad that justice was served, but it breaks my heart to see what happens. it's a tragedy, and to know that there's hundreds of thousands of veterans from the iraq and afghanistan war that have ptsd. we have 22 veterans that commit suicide every day. there's 29,000 veterans home homeland security across america. i'm glad justice was served and he's held accountable. but it breaks my heart when you see so many tragedies going on every day in america. >> what was your reaction to the prosecution's argument that ptsd had nothing to do with this, and mental illness had nothing to do with this? >> listen, i personally disagree. it was clear that mr. routh had some serious issues, d

that was patrick murphy. as we look at the legalistic structures that we're saying are deficient, is there enough here that something may change? >> i wouldn't be thatment on miss particular, no. i suspect that it will never entirely go away. but this sort of thing will continue to be repeated in court rooms around the country. i think that there needs to be a movement toward a deeper understanding of the fact. when there is a guilty by insanity treatment. they go to be treated forever, often for decades. this is not like you escape from punishment. this is more like we deal with the actual problem. in this case, somebody's terrible mental disability or disorder. and there was ample evidence in this case that was the fact. there was ptsd diagnosed previously. there is a lot. >> thank you for joining us here. former professor at the national criminal defense college. as always, thank you for your time. we'll be right back. stay with us. >>> we're continuing on follow the guilty verdict in the sniper trial. edd

i'm patrick murphy. we're covering this developing story.ive to retake iraq city of mosul is moving through the planning stages. u.s. military officials, in an extraordinary briefing to reporters, say that up to 25,000 iraqi and kurdish troops will muster an offensive on the stronghold of isis in iraq in early april. nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engel, is monitoring developments from istanbul. richard, why are we hearing so much about this offensive in advance and are we tipping our hand? >> reporter: patrick, i think it's pretty clear by now that there is an organized leak campaign in washington to try to broadcast this offensive, saying that at the very least, the white house is studying the possibility of an offensive against mosul, that would involve 20,000 to 25,000 iraqi and kurdish fighters and perhaps even some ground forces and that this offensive could take place april, may, perhaps even earlier than that. and some military officials i've spoken to are concerned that this campaign to broadcast the offensive is underwa
