patri patrick oppmann has the story. >> reporter: we are outside the hospital where doctors apparentlyaved david ortiz's life, big papi as he is known here and in the united states, he was brought here suffering from a gun shot to his back. doctors had to operate on him for hours removing parts of his colon, intestines and gallbladder in order to stop the internal bleedinging. it is still a mystery why two men apparently approached him at a night club that he was used to frequenting, a very well-known place, a place considered to be safe. and one of them took a gun out, police say, and shot him in the back and would have probably escaped had the crowd not tackled him and beat up this alleged gunman very badly. the second man has escaped at least for the moment. police say they are searching for him. so while that investigation continues, david ortiz has managed to make something of a remarkable recovery. he came to and has talked to his family. doctors here gave him the all clear to go on to boston, a city where he is so famous and revered. but it is going to be the beginning of a very

cnn's patrick oppmann has been looking into this. patrick?: ana, dominican officials are struggling to explain the death of another tourist who passed away while on vacation here. this is the seventh incident in the last year of an american tourist dying in the dominican republican under mysterious circumstances. the woman who passed away, her name is leyla cox. according to her son will cox, who talked to her affiliate wcbs, she died on monday. the u.s. embassy in santa domingo told him she died of a heart attack but he says his mother was healthy, celebrating her 53rd birthday and that she was an active person and she's not aware of her having any heart trouble. we've spoken to the hotel where she passed away in a resort town in the dominican republic. they said she felt ill and had to be taken to the hospital. but will cox told our affiliate wcbs that his mother died in the hotel. so there's still not a lot of clarity to this incident or to the other incidents of americans who died. some may have had previous health conditions. others appe

patrick oppmann is live for us again this morning in santo domingo. what can you tell us? has confessed to shooting david ortiz. and in this interview he did with media from his jail cell window, very brief interview, he says david ortiz, of course, who is one of the dominican republic's most beloved baseball stars, was not his intended target. he was sent there as a hitman, but he got confused. all they told him was their target was wearing a certain kind of clothing and he mistook ortiz. i have talked to the dominican prosecutor's office, the spokesman, the office that is carrying forward this investigation. and they're flat out denying this. they say it doesn't matter what he said in a jail cell interview. what matters to them and to the investigation is what he told investigators during his interrogation, and they say he told them something very differently. and we see that in court documents, in the charging documents, and of course, in the press conferences that authorities have given here where they say very, very clearly, very deliberately, that david ortiz was in

let's bring in our colleague patrick oppmann in santa domingo this morning. one man in custody but they believe there's another on the run? >> absolutely. i think there was a driver of the motorcycle and i think there was a gunman. while they say they have no ubidates for us right now, they say the investigation is very much continuing. they have one man in custody who was actually tackled by bystanders. police say his name is eddy vladimir felice garcia. we have a photo. he's the man you see in the video that a passer-by shot of getting beaten down, basically almost lynched by people who are so irate. this speaks to the love dominicans feel for david ortiz. he's a legend here, not only a great baseball player, but has come back, spends part of the year here, has a foundation and gives a lot back to this country, so people are just shocked and while they say there's no motive yet, they do not believe it was a robbery. every time you ask somebody here what could have caused this, they say there's no explanation, that he's someone who is so beloved. police say

cnn patrick oppmann is following the developments. what more could you tell us, patrick?well, i could tell you the prosecutors immediately this morning when we contacted them denied this report. they said the suspect of the alleged shooter during their interrogation with them told a very different story. that he admitted to shooting david ortiz and being part of a conspiracy to kill the major league baseball legend and they said this is just a story and this video, name rolfy ferreyra cruz and that he's worried about being in prison and being charged with shooting one of the most popular people in this country and they again say they have other information, other evidence that there are several suspects who have begun talking here and they claim it is a very complicated but well-organized hit on david ortiz. still no clear motive as to why. but they said that there was a lot of planning involved and some it of took place and some of the people that they have now charged were already in prison for other crimes and that they were involved from inside of prison with setting
