this afternoon, we have the deputy secretary of defense, the honorable patrick shanahan.rior toy a assuming his current role he worked for three decades in the aerospace industry in commercial aircraft operations. as deputy secretary of defense, he supports secretary mattis's priority of improving readiness through increased lethality, expanding and strengthening alliances and partnerships as well as reforming how the defense department does business. he is an engineer with advanced degree from mit. prior to dod, shanahan worked for boeing company for some 30 years. while he worked mostly on commercial airliners he also supervised ellen pollikowski's and my favorite science project the airborne laser. he wrote the recent dod report on space and he is known around the pentagon to have a corporate leadership mentality to include coming in early, staying laid, and doing whatever is necessary to get the job done. secretary shanahan gets his work ethics from his father who served in the army in vietnam. his father then went on to serve in law enforcement for two decades. secre
