cnn sports anchor and correspondent patrick snell is here with the latest. tal has leased pele's cause of death. tell us what it is. >> reporter: they have absolutely, and it is -- what i'm taking from this, sara, is this is extremely, trextremely d news. condolences to the family first and foremost. we have been keeping pele and his family in our thoughts and prayers, but the hospital ea earlier confirming he passed away peacefully. i think that's the biggest takeaway for his fans that, you know, we have been hanging on updates. we have been awaiting updates all over the christmas period and we have been getting them from his family, most notably one of his daughters kelly as well, but just for context, you said it. this is the only player ever in the history of the sport to win three world cups. just imagine winning your first ever world cup at the age of 17 years of age. the 1958 tournament in sweden and he would win it with brazil four years later, and then one more time in 1970 in mexico. three world cups. he played in four in total and won three of them

for more, let's bring in don riddell and patrick snell. don, to you first. what more are we learning about the circumstances of his death? >> reporter: well, the details are scant, but we know that during this extraordinary game which i was also covering last night between argentina and the netherlands, that he collapsed during the match. it was an extraordinary occasion. he was broadcasting on the game. his last week referenced the dutch equalizing goal that went in in the 90th minute. and the subsequent drama that played out in the stadium obviously consumed the 80,000 plus supporters who were there. but as that was happening, we know grant wahl had collapsed in a frantic effort to save his life was under way. witnesses told cnn that lasted 20 to 25 minutes. we do understand he was taken to hospital. those efforts to save his life were unsuccessful. and, you know, the football community is a small one. it's very tight-knit. of course we all work for different broadcasters or publications. but everybody sees everybody at the games. a lot of people are close

patrick snell has more on this.o many unanswered questions at the same time wahl really was a fixture in american soccer for so long. i mean, what kind of impact did he make on the sport's journalism world? >> it was huge. it was very, very substantial. foremost, our condolences to the entire family. i met him a number of times. he was so generals rouse with his time. i remember once ahead of the mls cup in 2009 in seattle we are waiting in line to interview david beckham. even then there was time, time given to his questions. he was kind. he was caring. a real pioneer, i think, for the voice of football really for not just the north american, but the whole concacaf region as a whole. huge respect from journalistic peers across the world. you mentioned the stature in the sport. 11 world cups, six men's, five women's. of course, i think back to a few weeks ago, front and center once again in a groundbreaking way at the qatar cup. he takes that stand. he wore the rainbow t-shirt in support of the lgbtq rights. initial

jennifer, patrick, and done. appreciate it. snell the news of grant wahl east death is hitting so many very hard, those who followed him, his writing, and those who knew him. that includes cnn's john berman, who has been friends with him for year. john, so glad you could be with us on the phone. you know, this is stunning news. how did it hit you? how did you learn? and what are your thoughts? >> i got a text from our friend brianna keilar last night as i was sitting in my living room watching tv, and i couldn't believe it. i literally could not believe what i was reading on my phone. it's so sad. i first met grant in 2010 covering the world cup in south africa, and he was so incredibly generous to everyone around him, to people who may not have known the game as well as he did. of course if you were a sports fan at all, you knew who grant wahl was because he was until the very end, the pre-eminent u.s. soccer journalist in the country, but he was also just a towering "sports illustrated" writer, really one of the last great magazine

patrick snell joins us. what more do we know?> this is a very somber and heavy day, no question about that. of course, our condolences do go out to the family of grant wahl. many of us worked with him. i had him on my show so many times. such a class act as a person and such an impactful career as a sports journalist and beyond. what we've been learning, though, is that wahl felt ill in the press area during the game receiving what we were told was immediate medical treatment on site before being transferred to the hospital. at this hour, the circumstances around his death are not clear, but we do know in an episode of the podcast "football with grant wahl" published days before his death, he had complained of feeling unwell and revealing he'd sought help at the media center medical clinic at the world cup. he had bronchitis. last month he was briefly detained, refused entry to the world cup match because he was wearing a rainbow t-shirt in support of lgbtq rights. he later received an apology and would go onto watch the game the
