patrick zamarripa was 32 years old. michael krol was another one who was living his childen hood dream working as a police officer. he moved from michigan to join the dallas police force because that was the team to be on, a department with a good reputation. his uncle jim he wielke told us he loved his work. quote, he was all in. he was all in. that's what his uncle said. his brother-in-law told "the washington post," quote, he was a big guy and had a big heart and he was a really caring person and wanted to help people. it doesn't seem real. his mom's had a difficult time. when his mother was reached by "the washington post" by phone she couldn't bring herself to talk about what happened to her son. after a few words she said, can we end this call? it's just a very difficult time. michael krol was 40 years old. lorne ahrens began his law enforcement career in california where he grew up before moving to dallas. at 6'5", 300 pounds no one was surprised to discover that lorne ahrens used to be a semipro football player.

but when i sat down with the mother and sister of patrick zamarripa, there was still unimaginable griefso leaves behind his girlfriend and a 2-year-old child named lyncoln, a little girl. i asked valerie and laura zamarripa how they'll keep patrick's memory alive for his daughter. >> my niece, she'll never know who her father was, she'll only know by what people are telling her. she'll never know him personally and what a great father he would have been for her. >> lyncoln is only 2. >> correct. it's so terrible to deprive a child of that. >> was she daddy's girl? >> yes, she was. he was such a proactive father. i moean, that was like the ligh of his life. i mean, he even took lyncoln to the gym with him. >> what can you say to a 2-year-old? >> you can't say anything. she has been looking for him. she's been asking for him. >> yes. dada. >> she sees his face and she knows that's who her dad is. but there's no way to tell her that he's not coming home. >> you know, we're just going to have to be there for her. and show her and tell her how he was. and how much he loved her. >> and just l

patrick zamarripa. michael krol. michael smith. and lorne ahrens. all five of them killed at the hands, police say, of a former army enlisted man, micah johnson. 25 years old. when they searched johnson's home, the home he shared with his mother, they say that he had amassed a personal arsenal that they found inside the home, bomb-making materials, ammunition, rifles. also a journal of combat tactics. and we spoke to one source earlier this morning who said they also found drugs, methamphetamine in particular. methamphetamine is a drug that can make people do absolutely crazy things, and show almost inhuman strength in doing so. whether micah johnson was on methamphetamine thursday night, we do not yet know and we might never know. apparently when the bomb robot set off the explosives, it finally ended the carnage and killed him. it didn't leave a lot of him to be tested. but that is down the road. in the meantime, what's going on right now is on your screen there, outside dallas police headquarters. they are searching for a suspicious person seen i

patrick zamarripa, he answered that call. just 32, a former altar boy who served in the navy and dreamed of being a cop. he liked to post videos of himself and his kids on social media. and on thursday night while patrick went to work, his partner, christy, posted a photo of her and their daughter at a texas rangers game and tagged her partner so that he could see it while on duty. brent thompson answered that call. he served his country as a marine. and years later as a contractor, he spent time in some of the most dangerous parts of iraq and afghanistan. and then a few years ago he settled down here in dallas for a new life of service as a transit cop. and just about two weeks ago, he married a fellow officer. their whole life together waiting before them. like police officers across the country, these men and their families shared a commitment to something larger than themselves. they weren't looking for their names to be up in lights. they'd tell you the pay was decent, but it wouldn't make you rich. they could have told
