so if you were going to be an effective patriot you had to be a passionate patriot. at the same time the war of 1812 was very kohno tro veshl particularly at its inception. it became quite popular and it was controversial at the outset and opposed by federalists and federalists latched on to this idea of passion in the sense of passion as a source of sinfulness, of selfishness and even of sexual sin. they turned to the bible and turned to james 4 in the bible and federalists, ministers who opposed the war repeatedly turned to james 4 from whenst come these wars and fightings among you and come they not from lusts from your members. so federalists agreed that passions were a source of war and patriotism, but for this this was very much a negative. also two warring views of the passions. one as a source of effective action and true patriotism and the other as a war of selfishness and sin and this set up the cultural debate that surround the war. >> nicole eustice is a professor at new york university her book "the war of 1812 and the passions of patriotism." dan is joi

and what does it mean to try to stimulate patriotism? they need to do it in 1812 in a way that's quite different from the revolutionary period when everything can proceed on a much ad hoc basis and there won't be a election into the revolution where president james madison was up for re-election in 1812 just months after the commencement of the war. he is re-elected. his secretary of state, james monroe, was then elected in 1816. those elections were in a very real sense referendums on the war and to win the election meant winning public opinion about the war. >> relatively speaking, it's a short war? >> yes. a little over two years. >> what was the end result? >> well, we may have different takes on that. >> i would love to hear them. >> the end result certainly is native peoples are devastated on both sides of the border. they will be dispossessed at a faster rate than ever before. i also think that the united states comes out of the war feeling much more secure than it did going into the war. and this is ironic because the united stat

the great benefit of the patriot act as it broke down those walls. prior to the patriot acts, within the bureau, those who were doing the national security work could not talk to criminal agents and vice versa, much less have persons in the fbi talked to the cia or nsa or others. the great benefit of the patriot act is it did away with that and enabled us to build those relationships, change that culture, and understand that in order for us to be successful, we had to work closely together on any number of these threats. >> is there anything you would >> what about national security letters? >> national security letters was the device given to us to gather information on the existence of the telephone call. we had a procedure we needed to follow. in most cases, we did. in a number of cases, we did not have the procedures. we move ahead quickly and did not put in place procedures to assure we have the proper paperwork and foundation in requesting those letters. we have put into place a software program that insures you have the appropriate foundation
