history of the modern world and the patriots history reader. so before i get in to this, i should announce that it is in its ten-year anniversary this year. just amazing to me that was 10 years ago that this came out. fifteen years ago that i was working on it. nevertheless the publishers talk about this later this year. probably in november. and we have been updating this in the united states and editing it to bring it up and that is going to be fun. so this book came to be after the patriots history of the united states already back then before some of these other books. i was thinking about doing a history of the world. so one of my favorite books ever as paul johnson's book called modern times. not only is it a a great study of history, but it's wonderfully written and i thought that i would like to be able to do that for world history and to be able to tell the story of the whole world that way. so again, thinking about this book for a long time and when dave came into the picture, he seemed like the perfect co-author because he was strong

the patriot act is not obvious government to break into a place without a warrant. that everywhere the patriot act and somewhat richard nixon did overlaps is the question of warrantless wiretapping, and there, this was a period when it was legal to wiretap for national security purposes without a warrant. but it had to be for national security purposes, and the debate over richard nixon's wiretapping was, did he do this for national security reasons or for political reasons? because the people he was wiretapping was journalists had also people who used to be on his staff. but the warrant was wiretapping of the patriot era is a reminder of that era when, not just richard nixon that other presidents could wiretap without warrants. and by the way, as a result of the nixon's wiretaps, some call them kissinger whitecaps, but the nationals good wiretaps of the nixon era, congress and president ford, and then president carter, signed bills which gave us more privacy. and it's the patriot act that undermines some of the privacy that was a post-watergate phenomenon. but for

she had just come to the country a few years ago but she had quickly become a great patriot. and when she saw the situation of the soldiers she wrote something that was published in all of the newspapers all over the country called the sentiments of an american woman. and here they are here, the sentiments of an american woman. and she then organized a fund-raising drive for the soldiers. she had women go in pairs door-to-door all around philadelphia. but she also contacted all of the other first ladies of the states to say we need to have this fund-raising drive for the soldiers, and they set up in your states, too. and in just a few weeks, in 1780, they raised $300,000, which was just a huge amount of money. and then she wanted to use it to give the soldiers something really special that they wouldn't have otherwise. but george washington kept saying no, but they need shirts. she can sing but i don't want to give insured. you are supposed to give insured. i want to give them something else. how about giving them gold? george washington said no, no, no. don't give them gold.
