ktvu's patti lee is in san jose where the family of that 14- year-old girl is by her bedside tonight, patti. >> reporter: bianca value -- bianca valdez has been on life support since she was struck here. neighbors who rushed out into the middle of the street who helped her say this road is dangerous because of the traffic and also because at night it is so dark it is hard to see and it was at least this dark when bianca ran from this side of the road and tried to cross to the other. >> reporter: it was a traumatizing, we're still in shock. raymond ortiz is reeling from the news that his girlfriend has been declared brain dead and will be taken off life support and her organs will be donated. valdez was struck as she was leaving the ortiz home. >> she got hit right here. and it ended up over there. >> reporter: gomez says in the past six months two pe -- pedestrians and a bicyclist were hit on this road. >> i had requested years ago about putting speed bumps but they said it was a thoroughfare and they couldn't do it. >> reporter: there is a difference between tragic accidents and prob

ktvu's patty lee joins us live from the west oakland bart station, where the transit agency is trying to protect shoppers returning with their goods. patty? >> reporter: that's right. this is one of the busiest stations in the east bay and it is the transfer point to get to san francisco shopping. that's why you can see so many bart officers here on hand to help shoppers with all of their bags come through with their black friday loot. now, there weren't any problems during the day but after dark is when the problems start. as you can see, it's walking from the station into the parking lot that can turn distracted shoppers into targets. michelle walker and her daughter met at the west oakland station to make sure they had someone to walk with and watch their backs as they return to their cars. >> you can get mugged or robbed really fast and they will be gone, because it's dark. >> it will be dark. >> reporter: within half an hour, it did get dark. the west oakland bart station is the only east bay station offering safety escorts this year. two bart police officers and six community se

ktvu's patti lee is live. this was a complicated and confusing scene. >> reporter: it was complimented and that is why we will break it down for you. it started around 11:00 a.m. with the armed robbery. police walked down this neighborhood -- locked down this neighborhood. they were looking for two suspects. they started chasing them. one of it them ran into a apartment complex and took a man hostage. the suspect later tried to sneak away but caught and arrested. the ostage was un-- hostage was unarmed. a second suspect was running through the cafeteria at aspire college preparatory charter school. mean time parents were told to pick up their kids. most were unsure of what was going on. >> only thing she said was pick them up. something happened in the area and all the police was over here. >> reporter: that second suspect was not found in the school or in the neighborhood. members of s.w.a.t. said it is possible he sneaked out of the building towards the creek where he would be harder to find. patti lee, ktvu
