joining me now, crow chair of the super committee, senator patty murray from washington. thanks for being here at a tough time. there are multiple stories out there that it is over. >> look, i took on this task of co-chair with a real sense of the urgency of this country. the challenge that was in front of us and so many people saying to me, please, find a solution, find a way out of this, i'm worried about my country. all americans, all sides, no matter who they are, share some real common ground. they care about our country, they're worried about our future, they want us to find a shared sacrifice way of solving this. but there are some real divides, too. and i came into this really trying to find that common ground and that bridge that could bring us together. and in some ways, we found some of that ground. you know, i have put things on the table and learned a lot about what we can and need to do in ways i never thought before. >> are you going to come up with a deal? >> i'm sure my republican counterparts did the same but there is one sticking divide, and that is the

called together, there are a couple other people there besides portman, kyl, kerry, max baucus, patty murray and chris van hollen. we will see if they produce something. you have been writing about president obama and his own approval rating with his base, and how that is holding up. >> yeah. i think there's a persistent story line out there that president obama has problems with his base. there are clearly people, a lot of them are commentators on networks or in print or in blogs, who are upset with the president. but if you look broadly -- i know you're showing the numbers, if you look broadly this is a president who has significant support among his base. stronger support among african-americans than any past democratic president. he won african-americans with 95% of the vote in 2008. he's likely to approximate that again. it makes the story that his base is leaving him something of a myth. >> thank you very much. now to capitol hill where all the action is. nbc's luke russert on capitol hill. let's talk about the key players and whether this is just an attempt to avoid the blame or is th

the three democrats are patty murray, john kerry and max baucus. and what they are saying -- i mean, it's hard for me to defend this or explain it. the problem stems back to august when the democrats reached, and the president reached an absurd agreement with the republicans who were threatening not to lift the debt ceiling and cause an international financial crisis. in my view, what the president should have done there is say, i'm sorry, we're not going to enter into an absurd agreement, we're going to use the 14th amendment of the constitution, we're going to pay our debts and if you want to take me to court, you do it. but people on social security and veterans benefits are going to get their payments. >> it amazes me how they are willing to go against the will of the people. the polling here is just astounding. nobody sent any democrats to washington to cut these three. what the heck's going on in caucus? >> in some cases there is a real separation from real america in terms of the perceptions that exist in the congress. we sought today, by th

>> well, as we speak, patty murray say earlier today she was still hopeful but there aren't too many people that are still hopeful that this group can reach their goal of cutting 1.2 trillion. they're really in the realm of last-ditch efforts. they had some closed-door meetings. there was an exchange of some more offers but so far they are still at a stalemate. they promised to work through the weekend but-- and they have basically until monday to find a breakthrough but there isn't much sign of that breakthrough happening. >> there were reports of the republicans putting forward a smaller package in the $600 billion, what's in that. what was the democratic response. and what's the thinking among republicans to have a smaller package? >> well, the republicans were thinking if the supercommittee can't reach the 1.2 trillion goal to try to see if there was some kind of consensus smaller package that they cone act. and what they tried to do was assemble a bunch prove posals that were less controversial through the budget negotiations, raising fees and smaller cuts in discretionary spend

patty murray, not so much of a winker. it sounded like somebody was hearing about movement. was i hearing that wrong? >> there was a period last weekend where it looked like something might happen. back us and others were meeting and they were talking about -- backus and others were meeting. they were talking about as much as $650 billion in taxes. the republicans up front have offered $300 billion in new taxes and that's a huge break for them. if they were really willing to go to 600 and democrats were really willing to offer some things on medicare and social security, you could begin to see some serious things. but it all fell apart and each side blamed the other side and who knows where the truth was at this point? gwen: thanks a lot. on to the superaccord. a court also stepped squarely into the middle of the 2012 election in agreeing to hear challenges for the nation's health care law, they set up a legal battle that will certainly have broad political implications. the question is why? >> first of all, the court doesn't just pick and choose. cases come up and this case
