we spoke to paul joyce and he told us what this whole community is about. anderson, what he described is simply this sort of camaraderie. you've got a lot of firefighters, a lot of police officers, you've got first responders, people from the coast guard here. what paul told us earlier, he said you know, look, if you had a house that was closest to the water, you would simply open your door, your window, and everybody else would open their door and the breeze would simply flow through those homes but right now, we can tell you the smell of smoke so heavy in the air, firefighters spent the better part of the day simply trying to put out blazes that kept erupting. one of them on the wires. it's pitch dark by the way because you really can't even see all the electricity is off. they don't know whether the fire was caused by a transformer or by some downed power line. but even one of those posts holding all those power lines, that was on fire at one point today. so this is still very much in progress, with people trying to figure out exactly what they're going to do nex

anderson. i'm with a senior at visor of the romney campaign. he has been spending a lot of time with paulu're also a key forbes policy adviser. let me get to afghanistan first. we heard the debate -- part of the debate between joe biden and paul ryan on the issue of afghanistan and the withdrawal date. joe biden made it very clear this country is getting out of afghanistan by the end of 2014. doesn't sound as if paul ryan was ready to go there. what is the answer? >> according to president obama's policy, not necessarily what joe biden said. but according to policy, we transition to afghan forces in 2014, and the administration maintains flexibility to keep forces or redeploy forces, even in a non-combat role. there are a number of years after 2014 that the administration's own policy allows for the same thing. congressman ryan believes that 2014 should be the transition, and they think the flexible the president built in is appropriate. but the goal, handing off security to the afghan forces on that very important issue there, is no difference between the president and governor romney. >

anderson. as john was talking about earlier, you know, this whole notion of getting out the vote, it is critical for this campaign. mitt romney and paul ryan are in colorado right now and en route to that state, we heard kevin madden with the romney campaign talking about swing counties, arapahoe and jefferson county. you can be sure they're doing the same thing in ohio, looking at swing counties across the state of ohio, ones they can flip to mitt romney's column. but there's something else going on with the state of ohio. and that is this op-ed that mitt romney wrote about letting detroit go bankrupt in the "new york times." that has come back to haunt him big-time in that state because it's so heavily dependent on the auto industry, the romney campaign is now in the process of trying to explain to voters that mitt romney, this is what they're saying, would have supported some kind of government assistance to the car companies coming out of the bankruptcy process. now, that is not the story that we have heard throughout the course of this campaign. rick santorum went after mitt romney for opposing the car bailout back during the pri
