we begin with kpix5 chief meteorologist paul deanno. >> it feels like january with all these rain chances, but this is the end of october, historically not that wet of a month but not this october and something else that's the opposite. the rain now is not mainly to the north of san francisco. look at all the rain south and west of san francisco right now. we'll zoom into the south bay. you're getting more rain now in santa clara county than in sonoma county, a couple spots getting steady rainfall, san jose, los gatos, mountain view up to san mateo, burlingame, palo alto and fremont. we'll show you the lack of rainfall north of the golden gate, but out in the east bay and we're seeing steady rainfall along the 580 corridor, dublin north to san ramon, alamo, livermore, walnut creek getting steady rainfall now. the rainfall totals are beginning to add up as we look at futurecast right now. we're seeing rainfall overnight tonight and then we're seeing steady to heavy rainfall right as we hit the middle of the morning commute tomorrow. already there's 1/2 inch of rain on the ground and more r

. >>> let's check in with elizabeth wenger in for chief meteorologist paul deanno. the wind and the rain down there on the islands is amazing to watch. >> i know. that video is very scary and it's pretty scary from our satellite pictures, as well. you can see the eye of the storm now. this is a 24-hour loop. and it's leaving haiti and that category 4 storm is now right there on the eastern tip of cuba. so our very latest information we just got from the national weather service showing winds 140 miles per hour gusts at 165. so that's a crazy strong storm and it's moving right now north at about 9 miles per hour. so it looks like it's tracking northwest from there and as you can see, it is cutting straight through the middle of the bahamas. there's hurricane warnings already in effect there. from there track looks a little more uncertain but right now it's likely to parallel the florida coast. right there the southeastern coast. the next couple of days will really be crucial with this but obviously this is a very dangerous storm. we'll have more on our local weather

. >>> our meteorologist paul deanno is tracking matthew's path. paul? >> and we're looking at hurricane matthew the center of the storm a category 2 hurricane due east of brunswick, georgia. breaking news in savannah, georgia. beautiful city, the savannah river runs through the city and spills into the ocean. all that wind and all of that water is not allowing the river to basically empty out and at low tide, at low tide, the savannah river was 7 feet higher than normal. now as all the water begins to rush in aided by 110-mile-per- hour winds offshore they are now expecting a historically high crest on the savannah river which may flood the entire city coming up tonight. the same story is happening in charleston, south carolina. so we talked a lot before the wind and the rain and those are important. it is the storm surge or water level rise that may be the worst part of the storm. charleston and savannah record flooding is likely tonight because of all the water being pushed onshore by hurricane matthew. >>> hurricane matthew also left a trail of destr

. >>> let's get the very latest on the storm track from kpix 5's chief meteorologist paul deanno. paul. >> still a very big storm with wind gusts along the coastline in georgia and north florida from 40 to 60 miles per hour. this is north florida right here. this is the georgia coastline up here to the top of the screen is south carolina. we are watching the center of the storm stay about 30 or 40 miles offshore and may never make landfall. it may just stay just offshore. but that's bringing in a lot of wind and rain and storm surge to the coastline in that particular area. no one place, no one location, is getting devastating damage. but hundreds of miles of coastline are getting light to moderate damage. right now, the storm is 55 miles away from jacksonville, florida. 110 miles per hour sustained winds a significant hurricane and the track takes it along the coastline as a hurricane all the way up to the outer banks of north carolina over the weekend but very interesting, it may do a loop and a couple computer models have it east of the bahamas and perhaps a second run at florid

let's get straight to chief meteorologist paul deanno in the weather center. >> let's talk about what's going on right now. if you zoom out wide enough, pouring rainfall is moving in to the south. let's focus on the immediate bay area with some moderate rainfall now moving over the city of san francisco. it will move across san francisco bay. alameda, emeryville, berkeley and oakland, this is for you. it's stretching across the bay right now and in the city- proper and northern san mateo county we are seeing some showers. in the north light to moderate rainfall light to moderate in san anselmo, kensington, petaluma. we'll show you that a lot of the east bay and south bay not seeing the rainfall right now but you will soon. this is the next round of rainfall moving in. how many rain? for the north bay mountains already an inch of rainfall. but for most of us, less than two-tenths. livermore exactly there, ben lomond in the santa cruz mountains a little less. futurecast says three hours from now, by 9:00 tonight, that rain becomes more widespread and look at all the yellow that moves in t

paul deanno has been tracking kind of the weather system that's happening over the east coast right now. paul, what can you tell us? >> looking at any one particular element of this rain that's moving through, i don't see any thunderstorms. i don't see any gusty strong winds. but one thing having been a veteran of landing in new york city and philadelphia a number of times, when you're landing and you land in a heavy control, even if the it's just generic moderate to heavy rainfall, when you land in a heavy cell you can get down bursts strong winds moving from top to bottom and if you are just about to land the plane and you get a down burst, that landing could be harder and more impactful than typically is. and sometimes that can take out a tire and wheel and sometimes it could cause the landing to go a little bit more interesting than it normally does. i would have to say if you're going to -- if weather is at fault for this i would not be surprised at all if the pilot would report a down burst just before landing when you're at that 100, 200-foot level of elevation that extra little

kpix5 chief meteorologist paul deanno has been tracking this hurricane. paul, we were talking about a little earlier the wind speed on this thing are going to continue to grow tonight? >> yeah. the storm will inch its way closer to florida, perhaps part of the reason we lost don's? because of a 70 mile-per-hour wind gust at vero beach the past five minutes. in the past three or four hours we've daned between 50 and 70 miles per hour. -- danced between 50 and 70 miles per hour. it's likely growing overnight. the new update just in the past three minutes it has weakened to a category 3 but still a very big major hurricane sitting just 45 miles off the coast of florida with wind gusts to 160 miles per hour. as for where the storm goes from here kind of unpress denned that it will parallel the coastline -- us precedented that it will parallel the coastline all the east coast of florida, georgia's coast line. south carolina's coastline will deal with the effects of a hurricane, at least a category 1 the next two or three days, and if the computer models spin th

let's get right over to kpix 5's chief meteorologist paul deanno to begin our storm watch coverage. >> one storm is finished. we are getting a break right now. but hi-def doppler radar will be active for part, not all, but part of the weekend showing more rain moving in. now in the wake of the storm that gave us all widespread rainfall earlier today, we are still seeing a few scattered showers for those of you in the north bay, sonoma, napa and solano counties up highway 29, yountville, saint helena a few showers. this is a two-hour time lapse. mainly it's napa county east toward lake berryessa where we are seeing showers no. rainfall totals have been good. this is a thumbs-up. mind you, this is october and these totals would be find for december, january or february storms. santa rosa got 1.5" of rain between yesterday and today. livermore more than one inch of rainfall. that's your average for the whole month of october. san jose and concord nearly an inch of rainfall. san francisco almost there. and hayward .58." now, this weekend we are talking about additional rainfall here but b

our chief meteorologist paul deanno is tracking the hurricane tonight. >>> moving right through the bahamas. in the past two hours in the southeastern bahamas one unofficial report of a wind gust to 144 miles per hour. this is a significant storm heading directly toward florida and the southeastern u.s. as of this minute sustained winds around the center of the storm are category 3 strength, 115 mile-per-hour winds with stronger gusts. it's only 100 miles south, southeast of nassau capital of the bahamas and this track is a category 4 hurricane not moving over land but staying a few miles offshore but parallelling 300 miles of florida coastline bringing the worst of the wind right along the coast from palm beach county up to jacksonville and the georgia border. if that were to happen, we would see several million people in the path of a major hurricane just in florida alone. details of our local forecast coming up. >>> some people in san leandro noticed something suspicious and called the cops. tonight after a three month investigation police say they put it a sophisticated marijuana operat

our paul deanno is tracking the next round for us. paul? >> that next round is going to be a little bit wintry. we're talking in some spots in the sierra up to two feet of snowfall before the first of november. take a look at the winter storm watch in effect for tomorrow night through sunday. above 6,000 feet in elevation, 6 to 12" of snowfall there. 7,000 feet some of the higher peaks of the sierra up to two feet of snow. yes, travel delays but also, yes, good news. we are adding to the snowpack in october. the radar is not completely dry nor will it be tomorrow. even though we are getting a break, it's not a 100% dry break. it's raining out there right now. 680 around san ramon and dublin. just north of pleasanton, heading toward walnut creek and alamo, some showers moving over mount diablo heading towards you in clayton and watch out, discovery bay, antioch and pittsburg a few scattered showers for you. as for rainfall for this next system, how about another inch of rainfall for san francisco, for san mateo, for burlingame, redwood city?
