paul heggen tracking storms and what's in store. >> actual storms this time.ain and winds and now the threat of thunderstorms tomorrow. let's look at what's on doppler at the moment and you can see all the widespread rain continuing to push further and further to the east. this bandover rain that's moving into the north bay represents the kind of activity we are going to see from here on out during the duration of this system but there's plenty of rain coming down in the valley. some rain tapering off but it has not stopped entirely. the rain is quite a bit lighter for much of the mountains but there's still shower activity there. plenty of showers inland in the east bay but around san francisco and oakland a break in the action. still sunshine breaking through the clouds. we're going to be seeing this rain in the north bay continuing to edge further to the east and southeast with heavier downpours towards the point but this all is going to continue to come at us in waves over the next 24 hours. so it's a break that we have in san francisco at the moment repla

more now on how the bay area is getting ready, but first chief meteorologist paul heggen. >> it is really nice today, but chilly. we have another atmospheric river headed this way, raking toward the middle of the scale as a three which is moderate, but that means we are facing a balance of an official rainfall in terms of long-term drought and hazardous conditions were too much in a short amount of time with the potential for damaging wind. hour by hour rain chances on thursday. starting off spotty showers in the morning with chances wrapping up into the afternoon and will likely rain through the evening with heaviest rain falling from the late afternoon through the evening into tomorrow night. a flood watch at 1:00 on thursday, going through 10:00 on sunday morning because the potential of river flooding from other parts ala, t the flo bay area will be highest tomorrow into friday and we have a wind advisory from 1:00 tomorrow to 4:00 on friday which is also being cautious. looks like the greatest potential for wind damage will be in the afternoon and overnight thursday with wind coming

make more of what's yours. >>> all right, let's get to first alert weather and paul heggen. we are talking about the rain that's moving in. don't go to the mountains? >> another in the parade that has been weird, the winter overall with the barrage of systems in january and now we're back into the mix again. another atmospheric river headed our way. and especially late tomorrow. that's the same time frame as we'll get the gusty winds as you can see all the cloud cover associated with the atmospheric river. you can look at it in a different perspective. the amount of water vapor just adding a different spectrum of information to kind of paint where the moisture is in the atmospheric river as you can see how it is and all of this is headed right for the coast of california. so we're going to see the rain chances going up as we head through the rest of the evening. light to moderate rain at first and moving in right now zooming in with a closer look at a while ago and a sense of what's happening in the moment. you can see some thunderstorms that are going as we'll see rain as w

sotyktu. >>> all right, paul heggen now, let's get cliche, shall we? >> yes, it is fairly calm outside. you wouldn't guess it was 12 hours of snow. another first alert weather day tomorrow with another storm system, and let's take a look at what you need heading into the next 24 hours or so of fairly wild weather. and the rain begins late tonight before it comes up tuesday morning. and the rain will start overlapping with that morning commute. showers will take over once the heaviest rain moves through. off and on showers on tuesday night, all the way through the first half of wednesday, and then wednesday afternoon, their showers will become more miss or hit with dry weather taking over thursday through the end of the workweek and into the weekend, so some good news down the line as well. let's talk about when the rain moves in and before the sun comes up. indicated in the yellow and orange. if you have the option to work from home or stay home and put in that half day at work, just try to avoid the morning commute. once the heaviest rain moves throug

. >> first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen is tracking the timing and what to expect where you live. i mean any day it will be congested as westlaw. >> right. when the heaviest rain and the arrivals of the gusty winds overlaps with the peak rush hour in the morning, that's a bad combination. today the first day of spring, the spring equinox, but it will feel like a wintery pattern through the next couple of days. the good news is we are still dry for the moment. no problems weather wise this evening other than the coolish temperatures, but the things will change quickly as we head through tonight and tomorrow. and for showers, the coast before the sun comes up on tuesday and the heaviest rain will be making landfall around 5:00 on tuesday morning. so even if you are an early commuter, the rain is likely to slow things down on the roads with that widespread heavy rain, really just surging in throughout peak of rush hour. this sals when the winds are going to be picking up. but the heavy rain is not going to last all day. it will push out of the bay area by about mid-morning, may

chief meteorologist paul heggen is tracking exactly what we can expect this week and into the weekend and you've been covering it all for us. >> still a few scattered showers around the bay area this evening. it's still snowy in the sierra. they're under a winter storm warning until 4:00 a.m. wednesday. we have scattered to mostly light showers and scattered is the key word here. there are a lot of gaps in between those showers but we do have rain falling into parts of the north bay and into the east bay as well. slightly heavier rain showing up in yellow around richmond. same thing as we look to the north of marin county. some shower activity offshore but like what's over land, it's scattered. it's going to rain for a little while and then you will dry out for several consecutive hours. this is the kind of pattern we are going to see through the rest of tonight and into the day on tuesday. showers have been more miss than hit during the reign light hours tuesday and wednesday. a lot a shower activity during the overnight hours. hopefully a significant impact on rush-hour either in th

team coverage begins with chief meteorologist paul heggen. where is the heavy rain falling? >> falling mostly in the north bay with most of the bay area getting heavy rain or about to see heavy rain. looking on the doppler radar, the yellow indicates moderate rainfall. orange and red are heavy rain with more than 1/4 inch per hour, causing some localized flooding. we will check flooding and wind damage reports later on. a lot of rain for marin county, sonoma county, napa county and solano county with plenty of rain across the rest of the bay area. a taper earlier and now the rain is picking up with light rain over the city at the moment with heavier rain over oakland and much of the tri- valley along 680 and 580 with heavy downpours for the peak of the evening commute which is a mess. more rain in the santa cruz mountains with one batch over the mountains through the santa clara valley. a burst of rain in san jose climbing the foothills to the east with more rain on the way. plenty more offshore which will be surging in from the ocean to the rest of the evening. on the futur

time to look at our forecast with chief meteorologist, paul heggen. i think we will have you losing to texas. >> which is the worst possible thing you can say to a graduate of texas. let's take a look at the weather out there today, i'm sure we are getting emails from the longhorns. we are dry this week, the dry weather is going to continue for a couple more days. passing clouds overhead, but no moisture, this is good news, we are going to stay dry for tomorrow, friday, and even into the first half of saturday. there's going to be an approaching system that will have some moisture available to it, so it is possible, light showers by late friday. we do not have heavy rain in store for us, even if we see the shower chances going up a little bit for the weekend. a little bit of fog forming inside the bay and along the coast for tomorrow morning, it is not going to last for very long. generally, more sunshine. we will flip that around on sunday, more clouds for the ending of the work week, but, we don't see any green indicating any shower chances. the sun

chief meteorologist paul heggen looking at how far we have come. >> a very beneficial rainy season for the drought. that does come with hazards with flooding and snow, but this is a close-up view. moderate drought pushing at the far northern sonoma county and the northern half's of solano and napa county. we are still abnormally dry and using how is that possible? it has been so wet but that does not refer to the soil moisture currently, it is the long-term rainfall levels. over the last few years, still behind average when you add up those amounts. looking back at the last 12 months, the drought situation bottomed out around june of last year when most of the state was in exceptional or extreme drought. we did see some improvement around november of last year was some rainfall, but really the rainy pattern started around new year's and accelerate the improvement. that little bit of green indicates the now almost 17% of california that is not categorized in any drought situation. not even abnormally dry and we have eliminated exceptional and extreme drought from the entire state. it ha

let's get to meteorologist paul heggen. >> a break for san francisco lasting five minutes, we will have breaks intermittently, but they will not last long. it gives us a chance to add up the rain that has fallen. cells first tower raining at a good clip on the other side of the bay in oakland. the amount that has added up is highly variable. over one inch in kentfield to the north bay, 3/4 inch in ben lowman. other amounts are less than half of an inch but it has been falling quickly causing some localized flooding with underpasses, ramps and flood prone intersections. san jose picking up .07 inches, but more is moving in. this is the current field. the yellow indicates moderate rain, the red is wiavth hemoinre than a quarter per hour. there is a lot of red over the north bay with the next batch surging into santa rosa across 101 making its way to sonoma and napa county. san francisco has a break in the action which will be replaced by heavier rain that's offshore with a batch that was in the city crossing the oakland hills and is now moving to the tri-valley to the south. occasional he

with that let's get to chief meteorologist paul heggen tracking the storm. >> we have seen these throughout winter. another one coming, ranking in the middle of the spectrum on the scale. this will be a three which means it is a balance from a long- term drought perspective beneficial rain but we already had bring this one. recent rain chances this week getting more soil to the moisture leading to the potential of flood problems with heavy rain tomorrow afternoon. flooding continues tomorrow night and early friday morning. also the potential for wind damage. a balance of beneficial and hazardous. spotty showers tomorrow morning, but those will rapidly become widespread and more intense. it will rain in the afternoon through tomorrow. a flood watch starts at 1:00 pm tomorrow in the flood watch their 10:00 sunday morning. tomorrow night into the first half of friday we are most concerned about the flooding issues, especially flood prone intersections, on and off ramps, ditches that overflow on the roads. a wind advisory at 1:00 pm tomorrow, wind 20 to 30 miles per hour sustained wind 20 to 30

. >> and now let's check in with chief meteorologist paul heggen with a check at the current conditions right now. hopefully a break is in sight. >> right. the winds are gradually becoming a little bit lighter. it's definitely still breezy, still under a high wind warning until 11:00 p.m. the winds are going to die down before then. right now the strongest gusts on the map are below 40 miles an hour. compare that to earlier today. late morning into early afternoon, we have wind gusts that were in the 45 to 55 miles an hour range. on top of some of the peaks around 90 miles an hour. the diminishing trend to the winds will continue, but the high wind warning continues technically until 11:00 this evening. of course, there are plenty of issues that are still remaining to be cleaned up. we also have more rain that will continue to fall. it's kind of intense missed wind driven mist in the city right now. barely shows up on radar, still plenty of rain falling in the santa cruz mountains and some of the higher elevations of the east bay and the santa hills as well. but the wind is a bigger fac

now a look at the forecast with chief meteorologist paul heggen. if you're thinking about driving in the mountains, do not. >> do not, the bay area roads are tricky enough with the rain. the moderate strength atmospheric river has arrived. moderate is the amount of water vapor being transported overhead. it does not correlate to the ground-level impact necessarily, but this is behaving the way these systems do. you can see on the radar loop with the big picture on the back edge of the moisture that's where the radar stops as it bends away with the surface bending away. 20 more moisture is headed this way. let's look at the heavy rain. from san francisco to the north. zooming in on san francisco, marin county, parts of contra costa county with heavy downpours, localized flooding possible. not onwidespread bas, but as you make your way around everybody knows the routes that they take where water collects around a curve or the side of one part of the road. you will have issues in those spots through the evening into tonight. southern half of the bay a

here is first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen. >> looking great this thursday afternoon. plenty of sunshine, temperatures one to a greater extent than yesterday. still in cool side but a little bit of progress. mix of clouds and sunshine tomorrow. temperatures about where they are today, maybe a degree or two cooler temps of the gradual increase in cloud cover. enjoy the dry weather while it lasts because the next storm system will send rain and colder temperatures back to the bay area just in time for the weekend. the first dr. raine moves in late saturday morning. the short term, high clouds floating through, temperatures met upper 50s, around 60 degrees. the warmest we have seen for quite a while. temperatures tonight not as cold as the past few nights but a little bit below average, mid to upper 30s and low 40s inland with low to mid 40s around the bay and along the coast. highs tomorrow, i think the 60s in shorter supply, most of us topping up mid upper 50s with low 50s along the coast. low 50s for most of the bay area saturday and sunday with a good chance of rain s

. >> paul heggen tracking the dangerous conditions for us. >> yes, plenty of drops as we've got wind and flooding to talk about, still bouncing around the cameras. peak gusts around 90 miles an hour. and around the ridge, marin county, reporting an 88 miles an hour wind gust. that is why there's a ground stop for a period of time at the airport. mostly a 55 miles an hour range. but that is certainly strong enough to bring down the entire trees. here is the good news. the winds are starting to back down a little bit. right now most of the gusts are in the 25 to 35 miles an hour range as opposed to that 45 to 55 miles an hour spread that we had a little bit earlier. the high wind warning goes up until 11:00 tonight. the winds will die down significantly before that point after about 7:00. the winds are going to be still noticeable, but not nearly as strong. still be prepared for the power outages to continue, the possibility of more trees coming down. that'll be a threat throughout the rest of the evening as well. still some lingering showers down there in the santa cruz mountains, squ

so let's get to chief meteorologist paul heggen. he has been tracking this atmospheric river and one coming on its heels. >> right, we will get through the weekend with just some sporadic showers but more widespread rain is in the forecastly early next week. let's add up the rain with the latest atmospheric river. the heaviest amounts fell in the santa cruz mountains. close to six inches of rain. some heavy amounts for the north bay as well. santa rosa picked up four inches of rain. two inches of that fell within a six hour time frame. that is a lot of rain in a short amount of time. just across the bay in san francisco, so even these widespread show a lot of variability. >>> the clouds have been hanging out over the south bay over the past several hours. we still have some flood advisories and flood warnings in effect around the santa cruz mountains and gilroy. the red shaded area of sonoma county is where the stream and creek flooding has been more widespread. these advisories go until 10:00. flood watch, 10:00 sunday morning but

paul heggen is here tracking the rain. back from a vacation and straight to work you go. >> come back on a tuesday and of course for the third consecutive tuesday of another storm system with the same threats. the rain continues to push to the east but more showers are likely heading through the next 24 plus hours even a few thunderstorms. we did not have that threat earlier today. but that rain did cause localize flooding that's tapered off in san jose though it's coming down at a good clip. around san francisco and oakland we're awaiting the next wand of rain. enjoy the sunshine for the next hour or so but we've been watching these showers moving in. this is the activity we're going to see heading through tonight and tomorrow and tomorrow the sun warms up the atmosphere and we look at the threat for thunderstorms in addition to brief downpours. we'll track it and it's not going to rain everywhere all the time but the rain is going to combat us in waves. it won't rain everywhere all the time but be prepared for the possib

paul heggen is here for just that. >> just in time for the weekend. the rain is headed our way. outdoor plans that you have on your agenda looking just fine, but the clouds will increase over night. that rain will be knocking on our doorsteps already. in fact moving into the north bay between 7:00 and 9:00. this is going to move rapidly across the bay area. there are going to be intense downpours, but they won't last more than 20 to 30 minutes, which means we avoid any significant flooding threat. the bulk of that rain is out by early afternoon. this forecast model keeps us dry in the afternoon and there will be some light on and off showers. another wave of rain moving through tomorrow night. but the rain pattern is going to stick around as we head into early next week. temperatures tomorrow morning, starting off in the upper 30s and the low 40s. we're only going to warm up though to the low 50s for highs. and that kind of pattern is what's going to linger into most of next week. temperatures remaining in the low to mid-50s for the highs through tuesday. some light off and on s

clouds and sun today, but it will be a much different story by tomorrow morning, so we will bring in paul heggen who has been tracking more heavy rain, gusty winds. welcome to spring. >> exactly. it's the same pattern even though it's a different season and that season won't let up any time soon. a look at what's up there right now. in the short term, it's good news. we don't have any rain this evening. you still have an hour to do some preparations inside and make sure there is nothing blocking the flow of water when it comes down, which will happen before the sun comes up. the heaviest rain is moving in as rush hour begins to ramp up. between about 6:00 and 10:00 a.m. is when we will get the heavier downpours. if we have any flooding, it will be tomorrow morning. there are going to be some flooded off and onramps and anywhere that will tend to collect water, and it will be breezy. blustery conditions will be with us throughout tuesday, 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and still wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour for the southern half of the bay area, and it will result in more power outages. >> that brea

. >> yeah, let's check in with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen with more on what we can expect. i don't know if this break was long enough to dry out at all. >> every break helps. just spotty showers over the weekend. it is nice to see blue skies after five-and-a-half inches of rain fell on a widespread basis in the santa cruz mountains. that is why there were so many issue theres. plenty of rain in the north bay. santa rosa, four inches. berkeley, three and a quarter inches. across the bay, san francisco one inch. about an inch-and-a-half for concord. one inch in san jose. though it took a little longer to get going there. the last of the showers had been hanging onto far southern portions of the bay area. through this afternoon. there's still a few sprinkles and light showers in the santa cruz mountains. that activity is not heavy enough to cause additional concerns but they don't want to see another drop of water from the sky. we have some flood warnings and flood advisories. the green shaded areas, urban and small stream flood advisories. watch a few flooded intersections.

here is paul heggen >> a lot better for the next several days! >> hey!be much better than the pattern we have been in recently. while that has brough the most mayhem across the bay area with every storm system, i has had a great impact on the overall drought situation . thi is what the map looked like jus one week ago, with still moderate drought for portions o napa and solano county. that ha been erased, and almost the entire bay area is no longer classified as being abnormally dry. over the long-term, years long, this is the impact that this recent rainy pattern has had. a southern cloud mix is i store for us on friday. still cooler than normal temperatures some sprinkles or light showers are possible mainly along the coast and north of the golden gate. it will be very light if it happens at all. then dry weather with an unsettled pattern possible next week. not a completely dry forecast, but there will be patchy fog to start the day tomorrow. we should see a mix of clouds and sunshine throughout the day on friday. the bulk of the moistur will miss us

now paul heggen will tell us when this will maybe cease and it could be better. >> it's been getting better and the winds are already starting to die down, but it has been a mess across the pay area today. this map will show it all. each one of these icons is a separate wind damage report. over 50 reports have come in over the last 24 hours, especially with the latest atmospheric river. the strongest wind gusts, higher elevations. the hills recorded almost a 90 miles an hour gust. but at sfo, a 74 miles an hour gust this afternoon for most of the bay area near sea levels. 45 to 55 miles per hour, but still strong enough to result in the hundreds of thousands of power outages that we have seen across the bay area. the current wind gusts again, some improvement. it is still breezy out there. but most of the gusts in the 20 to 30 miles an hour range. the strongest map at 35 in fairfield, a whole lot better than the 75 miles an hour winds we had earlier. it goes until 11:00, but we have reached that point in the evening where things will start to improve and continue to improve in terms

let's bring chief meteorologist paul heggen to fill us in. so many people say, enough is enough. >> we do need it for the long term drought. we would like a break every once in a while. with a few hoago. e days dampans we still have some rain right now. talk about how much rain we picked up within the last 72 hours. it is substantial amount, especially the higher elevation, santa cruz mountains . almost 2 inches long but coast and half moon bay, approaching inch and a quarter in san francisco. not bad with the santa cruz mountains. the rain is heaviest to the south of san francisco, light shower activity within the city with pockets of heavy rain going to san leandro and fremont. pockets of heavy downpours within the tri-valley. not as widespread as a heaviest rain we're tracking right now which is through the santa cruz mountains. over toward sunnyvale and san jose to the higher elevations of eastern santa clara county. snow at the highest elevations, the rain/snow line it 3000 feet in elevation at the moment. it will drop tonight. overall,

paul heggen joining us now with a closer look at those numbers. they're ready big. >> it's a lot of snow. the math is actually run out of colors to indicate how much snow there is . some blank spots showing. let's take a look at those numbers for the sierra as a whole. talk about 150% for the northern sierra compared to what's normal for march 3rd. almost 200% for the central sierra and 231% for the southern sierra. overall 190% of what is normal to this point in the season. there are those blank spots where the map has just run out of colors to paint the data. let's get a little different view of this. we can track the amount of snow. we have north, central, south and the sierra as a whole. the shaded area indicates a normal year's path for the snow water contents, if you melted down all of the snow to water how much moisture is in there. the red line indicates way above normal levels. that's what we created in the best year for sierra snowfall. that was the winter of 1997-98. a strong el nino year. the blue line is where we are to this point in

let's first though go straight to paul heggen who has more on what's been happening outside right now. obviously, wet roads. >> wet road to say the least. this will be a concern as we head through the rest of tonight with the possibility of more flooding, wind damage, dozens of those reports across bay area. let's take a look outside live from the mark hopkins hotel. you can see not just rain, but the low hanging cloud cover and the camera is shaking around. want to look at the rainfall total so far. over three inches of rain in san rafael and santa rosa. two inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains and that's where the heaviest rain will fall through the rest of tonight. and into early tomorrow. right now we have light to moderate rain. locally heavy downpours dotting the radar. north of the golden gate. and across the central bay and parts of the east bay as well. not the widespread extremely heavy rain we had earlier, except in the santa cruz mountains. that is where the significant flooding threat is going to remain. flood watch remains in effect. futurecast shows the rain stick

chief meteorologist paul heggen is tracking it all right now. we are getting a little bit of a break depending where you are. >> light to moderate rain, pockets of heavy rain for the evening rush. the break in the action will be right spread heading into the month of march which is hours away. let's take a look at the rain we added up over the last 48 hours, substantial amount of the higher elevations, both with 3 inches total of rain the last couple days. 2 inches of rain for half moon bay and happens for dublin. additional into rainfall for san francisco. still raining. first alert doppler lit up with light to moderate rain with pockets of heavier showers. whenever we put the winter precipitation mask on the radar, attempted deemphasize the intensity of the downpours. take that off and zoom in, have your fame falling around the peninsula, right over the bay and eastside, san leandro, much of the inland va a east bay with the heavy rain in time for the evening commute. sliding farther south, pockets of heavy rain making their way from half moon

let's get to paul heggen now who has been very busy talking about our weather as we're looking here. you know, very dry, pretty skies. the power is out in a lot of places. >> including at my house really, 31 hours now. >> i have not heard you as we mentioned that and tens of thousands of people, so i'm trying not to see too much. and that is frustrating, let me tell you at 3:30, and the power will be on at 7:00 and now they need to call as it is indefinite. no estimate as to when it will be back on or at least the weather is cooperative for them to try to get back on and to look at the blue skies out there and it's awfulfully nice to see dry weather across the bay area today and much calmer winds. let's take a look at the current wind speeds. on the strong end of things, which is always one of the windier spots. it's something that's a 20 miles an hour sustained wind compared to the 74 miles an hour gust yesterday. adding that the rain over the past several systems, it does continue to build the surplus that we have built up to this point of the year and all across the bay area as we

so that means that paul heggen is on high alert right now figuring when it will all happen. >> 18 hours from now, that rain will be picking up in intensity and this is the fimospc we ha i past several days but our atmospheric river scale they ranked as non. this is headed our way tomorrow into early friday. toward the high end of the category and further down the line, there is another one that will head our way early next week. that will rank likely in the weak category but it will be more rain on top of already saturated soils. the rain will move in tomorrow morning into the afternoon. spotty showers in the morning becoming more widespread and becoming much heavier by mid to late afternoon. that heavy rain continuing in the evening. flood watch goes into effect at 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. be on the lookout for water covered roadways. if you will be driving around tomorrow afternoon, try not to drive around at all tomorrow evening. we will be under a wind advisory with sustained winds 20 to 30 miles per hour and gusts up to 50 miles per hour. so downed trees will be a possibility. and

. >> first allergic meteorologist paul heggen tracking the latest round. those clouds right behind you are pretty ominous. >> they look on his. these are just showers across the bay area. nothing too threatening. nothing in terms of heavy rainfall. we have that in the forecast later this week. let's take a look at what's on first alert doppler radar right now. a few hit or miss showers with some heavier downpour sliding just to the east of mill valley, about to cross over the bay towards richmond. this hit or miss activity is going to be with us as we head through the rest of this evening. more showers lining up offshore that have their eyes on san francisco, but likely after the peak of rush-hour. putting everything in motion and you can see these showers are not what you would call numerous but they are out there. that's going to be the case tomorrow and again wednesday before a wave of much more widespread rain heads in late thursday into friday. futurecast 14 i chose those hit or miss showers and occasional heavy downpours. those are going to be pretty

paul heggen and darren peck and myself, we been keeping a close eye on them because of rain in the distance but now let's talk about the break we are currently experiencing. all through the first alert doppler not a lot of activity this morning, it is clear above san francisco her current temperatures are sitting at 45 san francisco her current temperatures are sitting at 4542 in concord, 38 near santa rosa. this is a stereotypical morning for us this time of year but we are sitting a little below average heading into the daytime highs this afternoon. we will be sitting upper 50s to lower 60s, so it will be mild today. keep the layers handy and pack one for the kids before going out the door take that umbrella out you don't need it today. yesterday wind gust, half moon bay a 53-mile-per-hour wind, los gatos 88-mile-per-hour winds and the city center loan in san francisco is pretty breezy. sfo, 74-mile-per-hour wind gust reported. this caused a lot of issues when it came to travel delays, and the pilots did not want to take off with a huge, gusty crosswinds but i don't blame them as a pilot
