so let's check in with chief meteorologist paul heggen for just how long all of this is sticking around depending on where you live. >> yeah, about another 48 hours or so in this unsettled weather pattern. the rain chances will gradually diminish. kind of an ominous look to the east. but because the sun is close to the western horizon, it's shining directly onto the rain clouds that are still dropping quite a bit of rain over the east bay right now. let's take a look at the totals so far. over an inch of rain. but under half an inch of rain across the rest of the bay area. about a third of an inch for san francisco. less than .2 inches for santa rosa and san jose. first alert doppler is picking up on the scattered showers across the bay area. a little activity around napa, lifting generally to the north. some heavier and more widespread rain is moving from contra costa across the strait up into solano county. more rain falling in oakland. that rain will continue to come at us in waves of rain. it won't rain everywhere, but more showers are likely to head towards tomorrow morning. check

paul heggen has our first alert weather forecast for us today and is going to fill us in!ah, more rain for us and more snow for them. the snowmelt slowing down is good news. let's melt it gradually. eventually warmer temperatures on the way, but that's not the short term. let's look at what the rain adds up to. let's look at downtown from treasure island and get a salesforce we would just a second. over 2.5 inches of rain in the last 48 hours. it is one inch of rain for san francisco now with less than one inch for most of the rest of the bay area, but these are high amounts considering that it is early may . the over an inch of rain for downtown san francisco has vaulted into 15th place on the all-time wettest water year rankings. 15th wettest water year on record and this goes all the way back to the gold rush. we are nowhere close to the back of the list. these numbers will be out of reach unless something exceptional happens, but the fact that we picked up over a foot more than what is normal for this time of year is remarkable. it is the wettest year we have had since

paul heggen is tracking the storm an what we can expect for tomorrow morning's commute. >> it looks like it will be wet so extra time out the door once you are on the roads. extra stopping distance is never a ba idea. let's take a look at what is happening out there right now. the next batch of rain is sliding up from the south as we speak and has been moving into san francisco . let's assume in for a closer look. we are talking about moderate rainfall rates. it is a little bit over emphasize, but considering it i the month of may where we don' see much rain, it is kind of remarkable that we are seeing this much moisture from the south. it is not going to be enough to cause a flooding threat but will be inconvenient for the morning commute. there is more rain falling into the santa cruz mountains. san jose, a lot of the rain is getting hung up in the santa cruz mountains due to the rain shado effect in the santa clara valley. moisture surging up fro the south will eventually climb a little bit north of the golde gate. let's switch over to futurecast for the rest of tonight. we will see t

let's bring in chief meteorologist paul heggen. >> we'll start with the view of yosemite valley for a top-down view of where wilson was standing and where the flooding reports are taken. on the merced river, the red dot indicates the bridge where the side and sell side drives split onto either side of the valley. one flooding reaches a certain threshold, that is would have to close both northside and southside drives. this is the river level forecast for the merced river over the next several days. and you can see the up-and-down pattern because of the nature of snow melts. the sun comes out and you get more flooding. then the sun goes down and the temperatures do not occur as quickly and the river level drops overnight. by the time you get to the second half of the week and, it is right at the wonder flood the of 12.4 feet. 12.5 feet is where they have to close and that is very, very close to where we will be by the second half of the weekend at this forecast is accurate. river forecasting is kind of a tenuous thing because it depends on how fast the snow melts and exactly where that

paul heggen has a look at whether we can expect the same tomorrow. >> similar, but some subtle differences. i don't think we will hear as many rumbles of thunder. i think the cloud-to-ground lightning threat will be lower, but still a weirdly unsettled pattern for the beginning of may. let's look at how much rain we have picked up so far as we look at the latest showers rolling across the bay from salesforce tower. total rainfall amounts highest in the santa cruz mountains. close to an inch of rain and otherwise less than a half inch. same thing for san francisco, with less than 2/10 of an inch of rain for santa rosa and san jose so far. there are more showers on going right now, including locally heavy downpours. let's zoom in for a closer look. there are showers in sonoma county right now east of santa rosa with higher elevations picking up heavier rain there. heavier rain over san francisco at the moment, lifting to the north across golden gate and into marin county . we have had a cloud-to-ground lightning strike in pleasanton within the past 15 minutes or so. less activity further to
