let's check in with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen for a closer look. >>> it's pretty bad everywhere across the bay area. this is the current air quality map using the purple air sensors which update more frequently and they give us a good snapshot what's happening now. it's not good, a lot of unhealthy air quality across the entire bay area. the worst overall has been over the north bay in the unhealthy category. i think you're likely to be in that unhealthy for sensitive groups for the north bay and inland east bay thursday, but there will be some improvement late day as an onshore breeze starts to improve our air quality, emphasis on start. we won't get out of the concerns until fire crews have a chance to get a handle on the fires burning along the oregon border. red flag warning continues until 8:00 this evening for the north bay mountains. relative humidity levels are very low, wind gusty offshore, but that changes tomorrow, big change in temperatures kicking in the next 48 hours. >>> for the first time in several years pg&e is switching off the power to some of the

let's go over to paul heggen . that area of the world, of california, isn't used to getting this kind of rain, this is three years worth of rain in some of the desert areas, this is not going to be good. >> it is just way too much rain in a short amount of time, even if the landscape was able to absorb that, instead we will see the heaviest rain falling onto surfaces that are just non equipped to absorb a little bit of rain, much less the amount of rain that is associated with hillary as it approaches. we are tracking the low spinning away off the california coast, it is remnants of a different tropical system, eugene. it has been hanging out for the last 10 days or so, then we have hillary coming from the south, moving in close to baja, california. the remnants of eugene is going to help nudge hillary away from the bay area. we are not going to see any direct impact from hillary, the rain chances are going to remain in the 20% range, even the further east you go, 10% to 20% for san jose sunday night into monday. t

chief meteorologist paul heggen is here with a look at the first alert weather day. >> so that air quality will be a concern across the bay area and the fire danger will be a concern for the north bay mountains. here is a look at the current air quality map. you see a lot of green and yellow dots indicating good to moderate volleyball look towards the top. more and more orange showing up, indicating the unhealthy for sensitive groups range that is drifting from the north. it is more likely that we will see service-level smoke increasing to where we get into that unhealthy for sensitive groups category. it is a spare the air alert day with the heat down temporarily returning. that tends to trap urban pollution, just adding to air quality issues. the red flag warning continues to 8:00 on wednesday. this is for northern and eastern napa county and for the mountains along the napa and sonoma-county border. we also have these northerly downslope winds that significantly boosts the fire threat for this part of the bay area, but we have to keep an eye across the entire region with the hottest tem

let's go over to paul heggen. are you in the shade? >> we are in the shade, towards the south end where the wind funnels through the entire stadium. a little bit on the cool side of here. temperatures are really just ideal for late august across the bay area today, almost exactly normal for this time of year, which is really nice for kickoff, versus the usual breeze. let's take a look at the current temperatures, across the bay area right now. again, almost exactly what is normal for the 25th day of august. fairfield only in the mid-80s, in the mid 60s inthe city with fog very stubborn today. there's the forecast for the game, we will hover in the 70s for the next couple of hours, then dropping down into the 60s. it'll feel a little bit cooler. we are in for a warm-up as we head into the weekend, temperatures are going to be back to a couple degrees above average on saturday, still 70s around the bay, 90 degrees further inland which is pretty nice for the last weekend of august. more of a warm-up will kick in as we head into next week,

let's bring in mineralogist paul heggen. these keep getting battered from one element to another. >> it is basically the squeeze put on the atmosphere in between. a couple of differences, one is hurricane doris. there are the stats on hurricane doris, still a major hurricane with 130 mile-per-hour sustained winds. it's tracking further to the west so that is from the hawaiian island chain. the actual storm system to the islands but close enough that the air around it or was directly affected by that storm and by a stronger high pressure to the north. the air gets fumbled in between the features and accelerated kind of like putting your thumb over the opening of a garden hose, that accelerates the water out faster. that is pushed through a tiny space and the offshore winds with a downslope for maui and that is a dry pattern. not only pushing the flames faster and faster but exacerbating the dry air in place. that's the worst possible combination. in terms of dora, it will move further to the west . it will weaken to a tropica

fire season and getting ready for what the weather is probably going to look like in the fall , paul heggen is here, and we have been really lucky so far this summer, but as we said, fire season is really next month into the early fall. >> if we are seeing what is normal for summer at this point in the season, which happens so frequently, that it feels kind of jarring, the heat was very brief, followed by cooler than normal temperatures, allowing the ground to absorb a little bit more moisture. the fog did retreat to the coast, there was some concern that maybe san francisco would not clear out to any great degree, but we did see the fog retreating back to the coast, it is going to come back tonight, with some drizzle possible again. we will be cool through the end of the workweek, and the cloud cover is going to increase a little bit even into monday as the remnants of the hurricane eugene sneak up to california. another warming trend will kick in as we head into the weekend. the futurecast as we zoom in, you can see the fog surging inland by thursday morning, then by the end of the future

let's take a quick break from all that, look at our forecast with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen. it is friday. we can't wait for the weekend to begin. >> once again temperatures will peak over the weekend. it seems like every brief heatwave that has visited inland parts of the bay area has occurred friday, saturday, and sunday. this will be saturday, sunday, and monday, but the high pressure will pinch at us from the southwest and southeast. it means more atmosphere overhead going into the weekend which means temperatures at ground level will be warming up. the air at ground level gets compressed by the weight of the air on top of us. temperatures will reach the moderate heat risk for many inland parts of the bay area saturday. the orange indicates the moderate heat risk expands significantly sunday, backs down quickly monday. every heatwave this year so far has been brief. back to near average temperatures tuesday through friday next week, but the long range data shows a decent chance that might be in for a longer stretch of above normal temperatures. both the six to ten-day ou

let's bring in paul heggen. we can see the smoke in the direction of the smoke, what does that say about the condition? >> the good news is the wind is not particularly strong at the temperatures aren't very strong as well. only in the low 70s, this is another perspective on the clayton fire. we are looking across from carol drive. you can see the smoke being produced by this fire but the conditions are favorable with the cool temperatures and relatively light wind, that will aid the crew to get a handle on this and battle against it, potentially impacting any structures. at least some good news but they have their work cut out for them. you saw from the overhead view, some of the red streaks where it has been dropped around the perimeter. they still have plenty of daylight to work with. let's take a look at what you need to know as we head into the weekend, plenty of low cloud cover, fog and even patchy drizzle for the rest of tonight. the temperatures are going to warm-up once the fog retreats tomorrow. close

chief meteorologist, paul heggen is keeping an eye on the potential impact. >> whether it is a tropicaltorm or hurricane approaching california, that is unusual to say the least, it is a major hurricane now, it is going to lose strength over the next few days. for the moment, it has 130-mile-per-hour sustained wind, making it a category four. that is only based on the wind speed. the wind is going to relax at the storm encounters cooler weather, that is the color in the background indicating the sea surface temperatures, barely a hurricane, 75-mile-per-hour sustained wind by sunday morning. when the center of circulation is still off the coast of the baja peninsula. the actual center of circulation doesn't move into southern california likely as a tropical storm for the first time in 84 years, that is going to happen by about midday on saturday. and it will continue to weaken further and become post-tropical through sunday night and into monday. we are looking at a tropical storm watch for the first time ever in southern california, it does include los angeles and san diego and palm spr

. >>> chief meteorologist paul heggen has been tracking that smoke for us on this first alert weather day. >> we told you a few days this was going to be arriving and it definitely has. that haze on the horizon is not what we want to see this time of year, but it's something we have kind of gotten used to seeing in late august, september. air quality not good across the entire bay area. these are the purple air sensors. they update much more frequently than the epa sensors and there are many more of them. a lot of unhealthy for sensitive groups readings and red for the north bay indicating flat out unhealthy air quality. to put that in perspective, what does that mean? when you're in the orange, unhealthy for sensitive groups, it's the equivalent of smoking two or three cigarettes in a day which for nonsmokers is significant. if you're outside, you'll get a scratchy feeling in your throat. the red category is the equivalent of three to six cigarettes and things deteriorate as the air quality also deteriorates. we won't see much improvement tonight and much of the day tomorrow, but may

let's check in with paul heggen who is joining us now. at least for us right now we are talking about heat, warm temperatures and maybe some mugginess. >> yeah, still some mugginess in the atmosphere but that is headed in the right direction. take a look at the dew point map. we use relative humidity to evaluate the fire thread but anything above 60 for a dew point temperature indicates that it is humid by bay area standards and we have some numbers that are into the 60s. at sfo the number was at 68 earlier today which is almost unheard of at ground level for the bay area. you see a lot of these numbers now dropping into the 50s and i think that trend will continue. let's take a look at the weather headlines as we head through the next couple days. what you need to know as we approach the weekend. patchy fog tonight, but it will be patchy. i don't think there will be much of it to burn off tomorrow morning. an earlier sea breeze on thursday , still about three to six degrees above normal. back to average temperatures for one day on friday

paul heggen is joining us from levi's stadium with the biggest block party right now in the south bay, the finale for the 49. >> reporter: it is looking good, a lot of folks in the red and gold, and some people are wearing the chargers blue, we will just try to ignore that in the time being. it depends on where you are in the stadium, it is either breezy and cool or warm, make sure you are dressed appropriately if you have yet to make your way out here, but judging by the people making their way through the gates, most of the people are already here. the last weekend is looking pretty good overall, we will see the heat dump to the east flexing a little bit closer to us and that means the temperatures are going to warm up. you will notice an increase saturday and sunday with normally warm conditions continuing monday before a little bit of a warm-up tuesday and especially wednesday. looking beyond that, things are backing down to really nice conditions for labor day weekend. a year ago, we had record shattering heat for labor day weekend. it is a different story this time around. of co

. >>> let's get to paul heggen to weigh in on all of this! very interesting to even be talking about a tropical storm in california. >> this is a storm that will be heading in our general direction early next week. right now it is rapidly intensifying. this was a tropical storm 24 hours ago and now it is a major category three hurricane with gusts even higher than that. this will go straight to the north and skirt along the host of baja california before weakening to tropical storm strength and becoming a depression by the time it does move into southern california. if it is still a tropical storm when the center of circulation hits any part of california, it will be the first time since 1939 that a tropical storm has hit any part of the state. it is not necessarily the threat of hurricane-force winds, although there will be some gusts accompanying it. it is also rainfall, which is a significant concern. already there is moderate risk indicating a significant flooding threat, especially for inland parts of southern california. we are talking

for more on the heat and poor air quality, let's get straight to chief meteorologist paul heggen for more. >> we'll start with the poor air quality because that's impacting pretty much everybody across the bay area. this is the latest air quality update using the purple air sensors which aren't the official epa sensors, but there are many more of them and they update much more frequently. unhealthy for sensitive groups air quality for a majority of the bay area and a lot of red dots for the north bay especially, just flat out unhealthy air quality. we'll have to contend with the at least unhealthy for sensitive groups in the north bay and east bay inland thursday. there's enough smoky haze hanging out thursday i'm concerned about the impact on especially folks with emphysema or severe asthma. if you or someone you know has those issues, check on them throughout the day. try to minimize your exposure. we still have a red flag warning in effect for the north bay mountains through 8:00 this evening. humidity has been low, gusty offshore winds elevating the wildfire threat, but fortunate

paul heggen joins us with a closer look at a bit of a haze in the sky, but what i noticed is it was muggy this morning! >> so you see the haze is a combination of the humidity on the horizon, kind of a visible manifestation, but also the smoke drifting down from the smith river complex on the oregon border. let's take a look at the air quality as it stands right now, and it could be a whole lot worse. we are in the good to moderate category which is kind of an even mix of green and yellow dots on the map above it which keeps us out of the unhealthy categories. that is likely to be the case tomorrow. most of the smoke has remained elevated and a decent amount as you go higher up off ground level, but we do not have to breathe that heir. the smoke is going to thin out tomorrow but still enough to send air quality readings into the moderate category. i think we will see some improvement as we get closer to the end of the work week to go along with the moderate air quality tomorrow. we also have hot temperatures helping to trap ground-level pollutants, specifically o zone and that has an impa

. >>> let's get straight to paul heggen because we have had a mix of the rain, a little lightning. >> had some lightning strikes last night. it does feel by our standards -- again, other parts of the country would say this is fine -- but when our humidity hovers at a consistent comfortable level for so long, any increase in that is like oh, this isn't what i want at all. >> a little bizarre feeling. >> it feels a little bit sticky out there, the fuel for those pop-up showers and few thunderstorms in the past 24 to 36 hours, a few on the radar still this evening. the remnants of the tropical system eugene hanging out over the coast, close enough to send the remnant tropical moisture off the coast of california. the bulk of the thunderstorm has been to our north and east in the high sierra. we have had some thunderstorms around the bay area, including the one an hour ago over the diablo range that drifted north into alameda county and rained itself out. that's the usual life cycle of these pop-up thunderstorms. there was some rain that reached down to ground level. we'll hope any sparks

i am told that paul heggen has a lot of weather!> still a noticeable level of humidity in the atmosphere and i am kind of over that. i did my time in the south. west coast now. let's get the refreshing air back into place. let's take a look at the big picture pattern. we had a weak onshore breeze which means the heat was able to make its way into san francisco with a high of 86, the warmest so far in 2023. san jose is also the warmest so far in 2023. but we will see some changes as this little ripple from the pacific will kick in a stronger onshore breeze over the next couple of days. that will push us down to near average by friday. you see the ten-day outlook for livermore has plenty of ups and downs. the roller coaster ride continues but the lowest we will be as close to average. the highest we will be is still within 10 degrees of normal, likely for the second to last day of august a week from today, topping out in the upper 90s when we could easily be well over 100 degrees this time of year. i have already complained about the

>> paul heggen is here to talk about the fire threat and what we see looking down the line. >>> this time of year we are concerned with any fire that is going, but lightning-sparked fires are dangerous because they start in many places simultaneously, and that is what we are concerned about over the next 24 to 48 hours in other parts of california. the showers and storms mostly avoid the bay area, but we have seen numerous lightning strikes in the sierra and mountains of northern california with a cluster of storms just how north right now. that kind of activity, when you get dozens or even hundreds of strikes, you get many fires starting simultaneously, and if any of those grow in size, then it forces the fire departments, cal fire to divide resources to try to attack everything at once. so we hope that these will actually drop enough rain to put out fires and maybe starting. this is fueled by the moisture associated with the remnants of the tropical system eugene which is swirling off the coast. we will see a better chance of a couple of showers and maybe even an isolated thunderst
