let's bring in paul jackson. where does this leave the thinking on the boj?e a poised decision next week. some officials favor march, thinking they have seen enough data coming in strong. we saw demand from ringo last week saying average demand has much more pressure from the union side for higher wages amid talk of raising wages to drive the inflation cycle. we are hearing officials favor april, that has been the baseline and gives the bank of japan time to include smaller firms in smaller companies. the big companies yes, they can give big way raises but what about smaller firms? i guess we've got figures on friday from the results of the wage talks and if they come in hot expectations for a march move are going to get a fire underneath them. tom: wage negotiation data is out on friday, the most important data out of japan. the governor has been giving testimony on the economy. what have we been hearing and how has that informed our views on the economy? >> the governor's job is not to give signaling about what is about to happen. he reiterates what he has

let's get more on this now with paul jackson in tokyo. we have certainly had lots of boj officials. ey live meeting. paul: oh yeah, absolutely this is a live meeting that is very close. this shows us the baseline scenario among economists is still april. but the case for march is growing by the day. we saw 30% of economists suggesting that the boj would move in march. so this reflects this kind of momentum towards the idea that the boj will move early in march. just for comparison, if you look at overnight swaps in markets, you will see that they are pricing in about a two thirds chance of a march move. so, yeah, things are gathering -- getting very tight to call. we have more data coming in this week on wages. that is coming in on friday. this is the result of the annual pay deals between companies and unions. last year the initial tally was 3.8%. so we are definitely going to need a figure bigger than 3.8%. our survey showed that economists are expecting the figures to be 4.1%. so if we get into the 4% range i think there is speculation that the boj will move in march will get even

let's bring in our japan economy editor paul jackson.d it in negative territory for preliminary readings and it was reversed for the one that came out this morning. what was it that created such a difference in the preliminary and final readings? >> it is a common pattern we see in gdp data coming out of japan is after preliminary figures are released we get a survey of capital spending by companies and the spending figures the ministry of finance released were very positive in terms of business spending, so that suggest companies are more upbeat than previously thought and spending a lot more, so i think economists expected we would flip back into positive growth in the last quarter, and for is central bank if you are trying to pave the way for an interest rate hike and you want to move, it is a lot better look for you if the economy is growing at the time rather than contracting. i think the history books would look pretty challenging for mr. ueda if he races rates while the economy is contracting and things did not go well, so it is t

let's bring in our japan editor, paul jackson. this is something the boj watches really closely.arnings, year on year growth of 2%, survey of 1.2%. what is your take away on that? >> pretty good results. this means the possibility of a march rate hike is very much tangible and i think it will be a close call. this data is looking pretty strong. one figure to look at is that same sample, full-time employee figure because that is maybe the most difficult part of the labor market for wages to go up. that has been 2% for around about five months. that points to a solid wage trend and this is what the bank of japan has been looking forward to feel reassured that we are in a positive growth cycle where inflation is going to pause -- going to be positive for the economy instead of the negative and this is the kind of thing the boj is looking for before he makes its rate hike decision. >> stocks markets are undecided but we are seeing some banks being a lot more decisive, seeing lift off this month. why could we potentially see a surprise? >> if you are looking at it this morning, sugges
