. >> do we have paul kirby on the phone with the lexington ledger some we are waiting to get paul. he is there on the scene and he is trying to get more information for us. you can see the route there. you just saw the route there from new york to orlando. we know this train was traveling south because we talked to d derrick pett away and he was on a sleeper train and he was sleeping when he felt the jolt. his passenger car had derailed but was still upright. and we talked to him just a short time ago. take a listen. >> no, i'm fine. i was discharged from the hospital about 30 minutes ago just with minor whiplash but i'm fine. >> with minor whiplash. all right. we are glad that you're okay, derek. can you kind of walk us through what happened? where were you on the train? >> we were closer to the rear of the train in one of those sleeper cabins and just when the accident happened. i mean, i was dead asleep and i was awoken by the impact and then the crew came through really quickly and got everybody detrained in a really calm fashion and then first responders showed up within, you

paul kirby of the lexington ledger. bring us up to speed in the accident details and latest in the investigation. >> the passengers that are not injured are at pine ridge middle school, which is part of our school district 2 system. they are being taken care of by responders and the red cross. a bus just pulled up at that scene, a large size passenger bus, one that is an over the road bus, not one that would be a local bus, which it looks like it's there to take the passengers either onto the destination or wherever they are headed. but it's just pulled up on the scene there. but for the most part now, the scene is clear. dehec is on the scene conferring with csx officials to get the fuel off the ground. our responsibility here in lexington county was just to stop the leak which our firefighters did a great job of with the hazmat team. but now it's just -- the road is blocked off at pine ridge drive and charlton driveway and pine ridge drive, and a lot of government cars pulling up, white unmarked suv, a big truck that

joining me is paul kirby from "the lexington ledger," a local newspaper.s going on there? >> well, things are going on and winding down here on the scene. we had a fire station in a town called south conerey just minutes from here. chief busby got here and they immediately encountered the walking wounded coming towards them, people that were not trapped on the train, that were not heavily injured. they began to address that, began to call for assistance and immediately got the unified command together. we have had people here from lexington county fire service that is right outside the city of cayce. but even the city of columbia came over, richmond, county. we have a helicopter here from the local medical center, the state farmer's market, our coroner has been here, but the train is up under an overpass at a yard where freight trains unload new cars. and then they are then put on trucks for distribution. and apparently near that, the train hit the other one. now, some cars are off the track and the further they went towards the head of the train, the more
