there are two ways for paul manafort to do this job. one is to take the trump paycheck and watch the good ship trump sink on the second ballot at the republican convention and go back to his lobbying business, and the other is to build a team and fight as hard as possible for every last delegate. we probably won't really know which way paul manafort is doing this job until the end of the campaign. but his first weekend of delegate wars didn't go so well. the trump campaign did not win any delegates at colorado's conventions. the trump campaign was also outmaneuvered in iowa, indiana, south carolina, and virginia. in many instances donald trump's delegate slots were filled by rival republican officials who say they hold no allegiance to donald trump. which led paul manafort to say this yesterday. >> you go to these county conventions and you see the tactics, gestapo tactics, the scorched earth -- >> gestapo --? >> there must be something in the water at trump tower. did i mention that paul manafort is a long-time tenant of donald trump's

in manhattan talking about how corey lewandowski had been sidelined or layered by bringing in paul manafort, who was supposed to be essentially the convention coordinator and delegate chaser. manafort went on tv and there was recordings as you played earlier when he was talking about how trump was essentially acting, and that his rhetoric was more for show and that he would become more presidential. and that's really what ticked off trump. the idea that manafort was on tv and advocating a $20 million ad blitz for the last ten states when trump can go on any station, any network, any radio show and make news for nothing. so corey lewandowski has some of his powers back. the small group, about six to ten loyalists with trump from the beginning had been kind of pushed aside, but they don't dispute the fact they definitely needed more help and trump is now bringing that in. the question is whether or not it will undermine his image as a straight talking not politically correct, brash politician, or whether he's going to surround himself with so many washington insiders it will hurt his brand. >

some say like it's a little too late for that, but trump in announcing his new hire, paul manafort, andul did an interview this morning talking about he will be responsible for the delegation process responsibilities. as well as overseeing the d.c. office, congression aal outreac and such. in the interview, paul manafort talks about cruz's strategy as being clever and saying they will steal delegate as well. ultimately, in himind, it will be meaningless because to him and other campaign vad viadvier told us the same, they believe they'll get to 1237, especially with the focus on new york and taking all the possible delegates. they would only then need to take 52% of delegates going forward. also an interesting headline from today. paul manafort talking about who he responds to, and answers to in the campaign. here's what he said. >> i have known donald since the 1980s. and we talked about it, and he felt i could help him, as i felt, and he made the changes. >> are you the boss's boss now? >> i work directly for the boss. >> so that's it. you only have one guy you listen to and it's trum

mark: there are questions about lewandowski's role in the campaign now that paul manafort is part ofhe team. at the time, the confluence of changes in how the campaign was structured with lewandowski being charged lead people to say that this would cause him to diminish in influence. he is still by donald trump's side, still travels with the candidate, still is an influential player in the campaign. the fact that he will no longer face charges names that he could go back to focusing. trump is standing by him, and lewandowski's public praise and gratitude brings an already close relationship even closer. john: yes, no question about it. let us be clear. it is the opposite thing. trump has stood by lewandowski, but formal charges were filed and the prosecution, if it had gone forward, it would have been difficult for lewandowski to stay in the campaign going forward, if he had been prosecuted. the alternative would have been huge for corey lewandowski and the campaign. i think again, i think there is a good message for campaign managers going forward, try to err on the side of not touc
