rick santorum, mitt romney, and ron paul are at the top of the leader board. joining us now is shepherd smithe from des moines. i feel like i can ask you this, because you are a guy that shoots straight. why do we care? >> i don't have any idea. i really don't understand why the process works in this way. many would argue it's not democratic, but you're right, it's great tv and at this time last night, brian, all the experts were saying that those three were going to be locked in a statistical dead heat, that gingrich and perry were going to be battling for fourth place and michele bachmann is going to be one and done. for once, they are right about something. >> as i mentioned, it looks like right now, santorum in the lead. that could change with another 65% still out there. 55%. do you feel like the collateral damage has been done with these candidates battling each other is going to hurt whoever the nominee is down the road? >> that is one of the things that insiders are concerned about and we have seen a shift with mitt romney. he hasn't been going against his opponents for the caucuses.
