joining us now in our studio is captain paul starks from the montgomery county police department. you for joining us. what's going on here? we're seeing a lot more or at least an uptick in the number of pedestrians killed in montgomery county and around the aa. what are police finding when they investigate these accidents? >> well, first i want to say that there are some open investigations, not only in montgomery county and aound the area. we're not laying blame or assessing who is at fault in these but we're looking at what montgomery county has seen in the pt and what we've noticed in some of these pedestrian collisions is that there is pederian error that is attributable to the collisions. >> most of the pedestrians are making mistakes. they are distracted. >> t two most common errors are where pedestrians will cross in the mid all of block or cross when the indicator is telling them not walk. but it goes deeper than that. some folks are on cell phones or talking with a friend who is walking with them. once they hit the street they are inhe danger zone. they've got to be engag

joing me now is captain paul starks of montgomery county police department. what happened after the initial impact down there? >> initially the driver got out, possibly to render aid to the two victims. the driver got back into his car, drove north about a block, made an immediate right turn on old george up to road where he opped. at that point a witness to this collision contacted him, advised him he needed it to return to e scene. the driver can did walk back to the scene. there officers realized he may have alcohol in hissyste he was taken into custody and processed for dui. he did give a sample by breath and charges are pending following conference with the state's attorney's office at the conclusion of this investigation. >> reporter: and where does this now put you? this has turned into a double fatality incident. where does this put you in terms of fatalities for the year? >> this is number 10 and 11 with these two 26-year-old men from silver spring this morning. >> reporter: and you sai most of those accidents that you've had at this point have been

joining us live from the scene is captain paul starks from the montgomery county police. captain, this happened early in the morning, 3:00 a.m., tell me about the circumstances surrounding this. was the pedestrian in a crosswalk? >> we got the call around 3:20 and i want to update some information. this is now a double fatal. two pedestrians, both 26-year- old males from silver spring are now dead due to being involved in this collision. what we know is that an acura was northbound on 355 driven by a 25-year-old rockville man. the vehicle struck the two pedestrians. initially he stopped to render aid, and for reasons still under investigation, got back into his vehicle, continued north to old georgetown road where he pulled over on the right-hand side. a witness talked him into coming back to the scene and that's how we were able to identify him. >> now captain, just a minute ago we were watching a man taking a field sobriety test. can you tell me at this point, do you know if alcohol was a factor in this crash? >> we do believe alcohol was a contributing circumstance as
