joining me now to talk about this case is captain paul starks with the montgomery county police department. thanks for being with us. let me just start by asking you how did you find out about this woman? >> well, at about 2:15 yesterday afternoon, a friend of hers reported her missing to officers out of the second district in bethesda. they took the report and provided that information to detectives in the fifth district in germantown. after they received that report, they came to her residence, knocked on the door, received no answer and then made their way in through the sliding glass door with is i acance from fire rescue. -- with assistance from fire rescue. >> when did this happen? how did she die? do we have any information about that at this time? >> well, we are investigating this death as a homicide. but we have to wait for the medical examiner to provide us more details on that. the time line is something that we're trying to work with as well. this investigation is still very fresh. we're hoping with daylight hours, business hours, we'll be able to contact more family, friends,

i'm he here with cap tape -- with captain paul starks to fill us in. tell me how this got started. >> an acquaintance of mrs. mcquain contacted bethesda and filled out a missing persons report. yesterday evening, officers arrived at the residence. receiving no response, climbed in through an open window being assisted by fire rescue. and that is when they found her deceased in her bedroom. >> reporter: i understand the last time anyone had seen this young boy of hers was september 30th. is that accurate? >> that is the information that we have now. this is still a fresh investigation. and our challenge sometimes working overnight is getting to a lot of sources. hopefully, during the day, we'll be able to contact more family, friends and coworkers and determine more about this time line. >> she was found deceased in her bedroom but this is being called a homicide so this is not a death of natural causes. >> we're investigating this as a homicide. we'll wait until after the medical examiner has completed the query and provided us with some preliminary re

starks was released from a state institution back in august. fox 5's paultoinette starks has spent the better part of the last several years in a mental hospital. she was released in august and moved into this house in bowie. >> i think we were both absolutely in in disbelief. >> reporter: kenneth trombly is an attorney who represented one of the victims in the nordstrom attack. he said he was told starks had been ponding well to treatment. >> we were led to -- responding well to treatment. >> we were led to believe the mental health authorities made it a fining she was safe to be released -- a finding she was safe to be released into the community. >> reporter: but tuesday morning just before 10:00 police say starks stole several knives and walked over to target. the 9th-year-old victim was loading groceries into her -- the 39-year-old victim was leading groceries into her car in this parking lot when antoinette starks walked up and began stabbing her several times. starks confessed and said the woman did nothing to provoke the attack. >> i'm sure the cour
