. >> cnn's political editor paul steinhauser joins us live from washington.too late? >> i love that sound bite you just played. i made a little mistake, minor detail. don't worry about it, wolf. >> is it a big deal? is it? >> that was classic bill clinton right there. it was a big deal. a quiet week. one of the top stories. another negative story for the obama campaign they didn't need this week after the campaign cash figures and after what happened in wisconsin. you add this to a very bad week for the obama campaign team. i talked to a top adviser to the campaign. and he tells me this, you know, listen, bill clinton, they realize the former president cannot be scripted. but regardless of the drawback, his positives outweigh his negatives and that's why they embrace having him as a surrogate, a top name surrogate on the campaign trail. they see bill clinton as somebody who can, regardless of what he says, they see him as somebody that can reach out to working class voters who are very important in some key states, key battleground states like ohio, pennsylva

paul steinhauser or political editor is here. not just conservatives who are against this law. >> exactly. let's break down that number that you just showed from our new cnn poll. there's that 43% who favor the law but of those who don't favor it, well look at this. 34% they oppose it because it goes too far. look at the bottom, 13%. i don't like the law because i don't go far enough. it's not liberal enough. what do americans want the supreme court to do? take a look at this number. you can see here about a quarter, just under a quarter want the supreme court to keep the entire law the way it is. a little over a quarter want the man tate that controversial individual mandate overturned and about four in ten say overturn the entire law. carol, here's one thing you can bank on. regardless of how the supreme court rules it will have an impact on the race for the white house. why? because health care and this controversial law definitely is bringing out strong feelings either in favor or against the law by voters across the country

want to bring in paul steinhauser to talk a little bit about that as well as what we're seeing in thers. paul, first of all, you've got this recall election that has taken none national prominence. you have the former president there. this is important because this really does set the stage for workers' rights, for unions, bargaining rights as opposed to what the governor has done, and he is looking at this and he could potentially lose his job. why are we see folks like president bill clinton come in and get involved in wisconsin? >> because both sides see this election almost as a precursor or a test case, an appetizer, barometer, whatever you want to call it for the big deal, the main event, which would be the general election, the battle for the white house in november. that's why you're seeing bill clinton today. i guess he would be about as big a surrogate as you can get on the democratic side other than the current president, barack obama. that's why he is there today. on the republican side, suzanne, you have seen a lot of big names as well, nicki haley will be with scott walk

our cnn political editor paul steinhauser is live in washington, d.c. for us this morning. f you're working on a campaign, paul, aren't you supposed to check what the competing events are? what was going on at the white house at the very moment that this stealth effort was underway? >> yeah, because the payoff wasn't so good. it was the unveiling of president bush's portrait. yeah, if they waited, ashleigh, maybe 10 or 15 minutes, i'm sure most of the cable networks would've taken those comments live. but -- >> big oops. >> oops, another oops. a big oops there. but listen, you know what i called yesterday? i called it in your face politics. and here's why. you had the president's top political adviser david axelrod. and there's mitt romney at solyndra. what were both sides trying to do here? discredit the other side's presidential candidate. that's basically the name of the game here. and for romney, he went to solyndra, why? because the green energy company received about $500 million of federal money during the early parts of the obama administration and it went bankrupt.

the ka-ching, cnn political editor paul steinhauser is live in washington this morning. like the sound effects and the visual. you are very classy here. >> yes, we are, all for you. how much money is the president expected to raise tonight. the rnc 76 million in may, the dnc, 60 million. they have catching up to do. >> yes. look at that. we knew mitt romney was going to start raising a lot of money once the primaries are over. the obama campaign knew it was well. more than 16 million more by obama and the dnc in may. that's one of the reasons you see the president stepping up the fund-raising. mitt romney is raising money, trying to get their supporters to step it up here. why does all this matter? the president, he broke all records when he was senator obama four years ago, raised around $750 million, broke all records and outraised and outspent john mccain by about 3-1. will be a different story line this time around. you can see with the figures in may. part of this is also the outside money from the superpacs. the republican superpacs are raising and spending more mo

political editor paul ste steinhauser is joining us to talk about that and other stories on the politicalromney have several events today. who's going where and why? >> reporter: i guess you can call it a fund-raising frenzy today. both men have been out there fund-raising. it seems pronounced today, kate. let's start with the president. he has six fund-raisers today. three in maryland, three in the baltimore area. he does the small hop from baltimore up to philadelphia and has three more at the franklin institute in philadelphia. and by my count, if you add it all together, he's going to bring in at least $3.6 billion from the fund-raisers today. romney had a campaign event in florida in the orlando area. he has two fund-raisers there. he moves up to franklin, tennessee, for another fund-raiser and had big fund-raisers last night in atlanta, kate. >> let's talk about last month. campaign cash is the way you keep the campaign alive. the obama campaign seems to be playing catchup this month? the romney team raised more cash than the obama team in may? >> reporter: yeah, it really is intere
