street when the shots rang. fox 5's paul wagner is here with the story. >> d.c. police say the children were caught in the crossfire when a man with a gun began firing at a rival running for lives. the gunman either didn't know or didn't care there were kids in the way of his bullets. as police tell it, about 30 children taking part in an informal summer activities program sponsored by the village of parklands apartment complex were making their way from one building to another when the gunman opened fire shooting down 19th street at another man racing away on foot. police say he either didn't know or care the children were in the way. the chaperone, a man in his 40s, was able to get the children inside a nearby office until police and paramedics arrived. >> the paramedics jumped out with sudden urgency, you know, and they were running back and forth to the ambulance and stuff and then they were out and grabbed the gurneys and everything and they -- saw them
